Rooftop would not unlock without manual assistance [solved]

Hi guys,

Just came home with my "new" Z4, it's a E85 3.0i from 2005.

The rooftop is moving just fine but it needs help to "leave" the windshield. And then it goes smoothly into the trunk.
Basically, it looks like the left side cannot disengage proprerly and needs a gentle push.

I saw a screw on the motor and the previous owner told me you can make the rooftop locks setting tighter or looser by rotating it.

Have you seen that problem before ?
I 've tried to search into all the previous rooftop topics but I could only find hydraulic or frame issues.

PS: Excuse my english, I'm from France and we do not have such an amazing forum with so many DIY topics and so on

Hi and welcome to the Forum - sure someone will help

.......its an International Forum, not just UK :)

The manual says it may need assistance if the roof hasn't been operated for a while. Cleaning the parts which lock the roof in place may help. It might fix itself (think positive!)

Welcome to the forum :)

Actually it has been used before, and every day.
But it is true that his mechanic has put a lot of grease, I'll try to remove some.

No idea about loosing this part a bit ?

Mine started doing that 4-5 years ago, needed a sideways pish to allow it to disengage - dealer just cleaned and oiled the locking mechanisms on the windscreen header and it went away forever.

Contrary to what some people might tell you it ISN'T anything to do with the hood mechanism in the boot, which is complicated and time-consuming to adjust.

I hope you are right !

You know what to clean besides the hook and its compartment ?
He used a kind a green paste which doesnt look so greasy actually.

Desolee mais je sais pas..... :(

- I don't think the mechanism is complicated...just look at the two elements, one on the front edge of the roof and the other on top of the windscreen. Ordinary good quality grease should suffice.

Salut !
Je suis à coté de Paris, dans une région bien moins belle que ta région d'adoption ;)

Ok, I just went to the car, I pushed some paper down the lock compartment (really don't know how to call that hole-thingy ...) to remove that green paste deposition and it seems to work better.
But it still takes, say 3 seconds, some time to unlock, is that a normal timing ?

Should be roughly 10 seconds from start to finish, including the time it takes to drop the windows. Probably needs proper lubrication.

I hope the Parisian scooters stay away from your paintwork! They are crazy....... :)

You get used to it
The rule is to stay straight and they will drive around you.

So, I guess I can consider my problem fixed since both sides need the same amount of time now.

Thanks guys !
