as a previous post i had in here my roof failed, so having a full comprehensive cover on the car i put it into elms bmw for repair, prior to putting it in the mech tried it and it wouldnt work so booked it in to have it looked at, taking in mind it has already had a pump replaced 2 years ago, got a phone call 20 mins ago and they carnt find anything wrong with it, it goes up and down every time they press the button, even though they say it makes a funny noise, ive told them to jet wash the out side to see if that does anything, i know its broke, they know its broke but wont do anything till it stops working infront of them, any ideas !!!!!!!! help

I know it's frustrating, but the fact they will not start a repair until they can confirm exactly what the problem is speaks well of them. If they did the work on speculation and it turned out to be something else, not only would they rightfully have to eat the repair costs, but they look bad as well and possibly lose you as a customer.

Intermittent problems are extremely frustrating. There is no way to get around the fact that one cannot diagnose a problem when the problem is not evidencing itself. Until someone can reliably find a way to reproduce the problem, there is little to do but wait until it gets bad enough to diagnose. :headbang:

Well, there is one thing. You could insist they proceed with the repair and you take full responsibility for the diagnosis. If you're wrong, you are still stuck with the repair bill. There's a good chance you'll be OK, and you do get a new roof motor out of it no matter what, but it's still a risk I'd personally be reluctant to take. It's up to you, it's your money.

just got a phone call today off Elms BMW, After telling them to jet wash the car around the hood join,it has just failed so they are now taking the roof off, hurray, dissapointed as i will have to have there brand new 320 for another 3 days. just aswell the weather is shite at the moment and couldnt even put the hood down if i wanted, must admit, elms of cambridge have been excellent sofar, if anyone is passing by camborne in cambridge pop into there show room, its mint, free cream cakes sweets coffee tea quaisants the service is second to none. will keep you posted.

well tuesday morning, just poped into Elms and they have just fitted a new motor, all covered in the warranty i bought off the previuos owner, just waiting for them to put it all back to gether now and i can return there lovely brand new 3 series,[ funny pressed what i thought was the interior light coming to work and it was an sos button and put me straight through to the emergency services, very clever, but embarassing for me] ask them if they would reseal the roof while they had it bit they wanted £100. thoght that was a bit exspensive !!!!! what do you think, anyway hopefully back on the road today.

Reseal? Do you mean reapply a water repellent treatment to the fabric? If you meant reapply the rubber seals along the edges, that would be a deal too good to be true! You don't actually want to seal the fabric, it needs to breathe, the layer below that is the true waterproofing. The product is less than a tenner, but one needs to mask off the glass and paintwork, there's some labour involved in that. Given BMW labour rates, I suppose 100 quid is fair, but it's work that can be done by someone that works for far less per hour.

I imagine most people either do it themselves, or if they can't be bothered, have a detailer do it for them. Come to think of it, they're probably hiring a detailer to come in and do it for them, then marking up the charge. Cut out the middle man!

well got the car back yesterday, everything working well, total bill, £2100.
15 hours labour in the end and a motor £300, all inclusive of Vat, bmw rates 125 per hour, but elms of cambridge were great, it only cost me £100 excess on my warranty, mint. bought the kit to do my roof while i was there, enough to do it 4 or 5 times, £30. sorted
