Roof won't close

 Witham, Essex.
Just got in, and. Went to put the roof back up, but it won't go.
Keeps bonging with the roof icon coming up on the dash.
Any thoughts? As I can't find anything in the manual... :headbang:

I can't hear the motor, but when I press the up button, the red light on the down button comes on..

Have you made sure the parcel shelf is fully clicked down Smurfalot, it may have popped out if it was'nt fully seated. Worth a try?

Make sure the shelf is fully seated, try the down button first to make sure the roof is fully open, then try the close button.

Did check that first.
Stealers think, a micro switch has gone, which is then causing the hydraulic pump to run continuously causing it to over heat.

Does anyone know a BMW Indy, in Essex area?
Even someone that has experience of doing them selves? More than happy to pay..

In the meantime. I will have to get a basic roof cover to cover her tonight..

It might not be a switch that has failed, it could be that the mechanism is'nt quite going far enough to activate the switch. Could you get someone to sit in the car to observe the lights whilst you activate switches yourself until you find the fully open one? I'm just trying to think of things to try before you give it to someone as it's going to be open season on your wallet, they can spin anything to you and you won't know s**t from clay.

The roof did the same on my previous z4, luckily it was still under warranty. Turned out to be the hydraulics and a micro sensor, before it failed completely the damn roof warning would ping none-stop for ages then suddenly go quiet.

My colleague has just had her roof repaired for the fourth time on a 13k car.
Would ping even with roof closed or get stuck some where in between.
The same switches have been changed four times according to all the work sheets she has been given.

Items 2 and 3.
Be interested to know if this is a trend.
And I think this diagram is a bit vague as to the exact position of each switch.
I'm well out of warranty, any problems I think I would just replace all the switches !
Problem is I think some switches form part of the cylinders.
Makes me wonder if the quality of the switches has changed over time (or ever was fitting them).

She was pretty much ready to give up on the car, but now the roof is behaving, so getting her monies worth out of it.

Had the same problem,

I have a couple of M3 owning mates who use this place, both rate it very highly.

Mine stuck in the closed position and like others it was a failed micro switch , luckily it was covered by warranty but they did need car for 2 days for some reason

When you see where the wires are threaded, not surprised they need two days.
Makes me wonder if it's the switches or bad routing of wires around the pivot points.

Ok... Update... The motor is knackered!
Hopefully, should be covered under warranty, and mechanic will contact them tomoro to get the go ahead. So hopefully, gonna be glad I pushed the dealer for a 12 month policy, as their standard 3mth, ran out 2 weeks ago.
In the meantime, the poor thing keeps getting covered, just in case of rain. Fortunately, I live in a very quiet curl-de-sac, with lots of noisy neighbours!

Ok...warranty company will only pay for a reconditioned motor.. Not the whole hydraulics unit. This comes with a 12mth warranty, for what it seems to be worth..
For a complete unit from BMW, I have to foot the difference.. Which is about 600 quid.
Thoughts and recommendations please...

Hi Smurfalot
How did you get on with your repair? Do you know why the motor failed, was it water ingress like mine?
You will be delighted you got the longer warranty, the hydro unit plus associated gubbins comes to over £700 +vat.

Bill

Nah, wasn't water ingress. Having to replace fuse unit in the boot too, so poss blew a fuse when the motor packed up. May have been on its way. Car is an 09 plate.
Warranty doesn't cover the entire unit, only the motor within the unit. Pedantic.
However, total bill is £900, and they are picking up a chunk of it.
Will just have to leave the EDT & auto box service, I was considering, until another time lol.

I know this is years later but hopefully it helps someone. I have a 2003 Z4 E85, all of a sudden roof top wouldn't latch to the windshield, sounded like the motor was trying but it wasn't turning output shaft at all. Took the motor apart and found the gears were broken, you can order new gears from amazon that are metal(linked below), instead of the plastic ones BMW used for whatever reason. Hope this helps someone!
