Roof wont close

Uh oh, new expensive problem perhaps?

Roof won't shut. If I hold the button the bottom orange light comes on, but nothing happens (windows don't move either). I've check the boot shelf, I've recently had a large bag in there dropping my mum off at the airport which could of damaged it (was a tight squeeze) but from what I can see it all looks OK. I've set the shelf to be lowest and flipped it up and down to make sure it's operating fine.

I've tried gently pushing the roof up as well to see if it needs a nudge to get going but it's locked in firmly.

If I recall correctly, the guy I bought it off a few months ago said it had recently had a new roof motor.

Thanks for any help!

can you hear the motor going round?? you might have diconnected the hydrolics?

Sorry thread title wrong, I mean it can't open.

I think I can just hear some motor starting but it doesn't last long. Will listen carefully tonight and report back.

Where are the hydrolics located?

Could be a dodgy micro switch - orange light normally indicates the parcel shelf is up, but you have checked that. They do fail, I believe, but I have no direct experience of how to check / cost to fix.

I agree with Bing, parcel self is the reason the orange light comes on, maybe take the switch out and look at it and/or bridge the wires to see if it works then ..

If your windows dont go down, its not the motor or the red lever. It hasn't even got to the stage where they would come into play.

It is parcel shelf microswitch, dash switch or fuse/supply related.

Thanks for replies everyone. The hydraulic pull looks like it's in fine.

The parcel shelf I've put up/down a few times to see if that helps but no luck. Just to confirm, the shelf should be in the lowest position for the roof to operate to give it space?

Is it easy to remove re-plug in the switch/sensor?

Tommy, it's not the shelf itself, it's the sensor that this shelf sits on to tell the roof it can open.

Chances are you've damaged it. Locate the switch and check it out. See if you can operate in manually.

I'm struggling to find the switch, can anyone point me to it? And does anyone know the part number so I can order a new one? (Guessing it's cheap so I can just stick it in and see if it fixes it?)

Thanks everyone for your help :) Driving to Dorset today and am gutted I can't roof down it :(

I had a look for the sensor again the other day and can't find it anywhere or where it's meant to be, does someone have a photo they can show me at all?

Two things:

I cannot believe no one on here has taken a photo for you

I cannot believe you didn't type 'Z4 roof microswitch' into Google

So here you go,

the last one is to show the switch itself, it may not be a broken lever

by the way, I dont have a Z4 anymore so couldn't take a photo, but they are off Google search as above

If you're in a quiet area you can hear the micro switch clicking as it engages and disengages with the shelf moving. Make sure you didn't break the peg that engages into the slot where the micro switch is when you put the large bag in the boot.

If you want noob/schoolboy error, I had heart failure yesterday when I pressed the roof button and nothing at all happened. I was pressing the roof up button

*sigh* I'm getting old.
