Roof will not come up and nor will windows.

I have a problem that has just occurred on my E85 2003! I have dropped the roof, all seemed well, however, I cannot now get it up electrically, the windows are down and will not come up and a number of other "querky electrical things".

I have a colleague put his diagnostic computer on the car and it reports an 87K bus error and a BE internal error. Are these likely to be associated with my roof and windows problems or just a red herring - in which case is anybody able to throw any light on my roof / window problems please?

(Interestingly we changed the passenger seat recently and had an error indicating the seat belt tensioner was faulty, which we replaced - could this be the cause of the K bus error)

When pressing the button on the consul, what colour is the light? Have you placed anything in the trunk that might have moved the parcel shelf?

Could just be as simple as the shelf microswitch not engaging properly.

Sounds to me like either the K-BUS or I-BUS is down and needs a reset.
pull the main battery connection and leave disconnected for AT LEAST 30 minutes (go for longer if you've got the time).

If, after doing that, it still doesn't work / get the same error, then it's likely your K/I-BUS is being shorted / grounded out somewhere.
Check for water ingress and remove anything "non-oem" (eg, gaptech, etc), then try a reset again.

Failing that, depending on your experience with car electronics, you may need to go find an auto-electrician with decent BMW experience, or a main dealer.


Incase you don't know what I'm talking about... the K-BUS is effectively a conference call over a wire between all the major electronic gizmos in the car (power steering, engine, auto trans, etc).
The I-BUS is the same thing, but for less important stuff (radio, heating control, etc).

If this "conference call" is dropped, then the different computers in the car can no longer talk to each other, and s**t stops working / acting funny.

Thanks for suggestion Guys. I have checked the micro switch and it seems OK. There are no lights on the buttons when attempting to close the roof.

I have concluded there is so something wrong at a higher order as the Windows don't work, the internal indicator tell tale does not work, the Radio displays the word "Disabled", and one or two other querks!

So unfortunately it is into BMW tomorrow.....gulp! :(

It's not gonna be the microswitch.. that won't affect the windows, just the roof.
fair shout, but can't be that in this instance.

Disabled on the radio? I-BUS is down mate. 100%

Honestly, disconnect the battery in the boot, leave it 30 minutes, and give it a retry, if you've not already
(don't just disconnect, wait a bit, then reconnect, you need to leave it a good solid 30 minutes minimum for all the systems with backup power to drain out fully)
 
SK93 - many thanks for your comments advise. I think you are spot on - a colleague put a computer on the car and it reported a 87K Bus error - we had no idea what it meant. Interestingly it also report an BE code - "Internal error light module".

Is it possible the light module is causing the 87K Bus error? If so , where / what is the light module?

Appreciate any further advise - I might just save me a lot of dosh :)
 
Well £138 pounds later BMW tell me the diagnostic computer cannot talk to the car - and suggest the "Body Control module", would be the first component they would replace to see if it clears the problem.

Can anybody enlighten me as to where it is and what it controls please?

WHAT!!!!! £138 :o THE ROBBING BAST*RDS!! If that were me mate i would threaten them with trading standards. Could they not even explain what the "body control module" is/does for you?

Sorry i cant help you with your probs, but did you disconnect the battery as per sk93 suggested?

Perhaps he will be along to help you out shortly.

Hi Tug, I did disconnect the battery and left it overnight - but no change. :( I hope SK93 might be able to throw some light on it, he seems very enlightened.
