Roof troubles

Ever since I got my zed I have been paranoid about the roof motor giving up!

Tonight as the sun was out I dropped the roof for the drive home. The roof dropped most the way but stopped about 5-10cm from the catch - I assumed as the roof hadn't been down for a while that I needed to have a look at the fold when I got home.

Unfortunately once home I can't get the roof to go up or down electronically. I got it back up manually but when I press the button to release - the catches unlock - the windows drop - but nothing from the roof motor.

I've studied the many posts on here tonight and have come to the conclusion it must be the motor.

Before I start parting with my hard earned is there anything I can do to confirm 100% it is the motor? Or will I need to visit the stealer?

Assuming it is the motor I'm not sure I am confident enough to follow Shipkillers guide. As such has anyone had this job done by any indy in the west midlands? If so could you let me know who and how much.

If you take the grille out from behind the passenger seat (beside the cubby hole/subwoofer) you will find the connectors for the roof motor, you will also get better access removing the door seal by the rear panel and gently prising the panel away. The connector can be separated and tested to see if there is power , If you have power there you will most likely have a motor problem or connections on the motor, so it is roof out.
I can't remember which connector it is, but it will have 2 larger gauge wires. Also not sure if the motor wires run to the top or bottom half of the connection so you would be best to test both halves.

Had a look at that place - think I'm best sticking to a proper Indy.

Might give autotechperformance in Telford a call. They seem highly rated from what I have read before.

Seems it - rightly or wrongly I'd rather a BMW Indy do it.

Although right now I'm tempted to give shipkillers guide a go - seems to have had many succesfull followers!
 
I can see your point being tempted to have a go yourself,whats the worst that can happen?-you mess it up and have to take it to an indy anyway.
 
I know - but if I have the roof in pieces it might not be as easy to get it to an indy!

Waiting for some indy's to come back to me on labour costs and will decide (hopefully!!) then.
 
Got a few quotes from independents and they are not as bad as expected! Ranges from about £650 to £450 all in.

Popped over to see Peter at autotech in Telford. Can see why he gets such great feedback. Plugged the car into autologic and that's showing a fault with the resistor when he tried to lower the roof - whether that is a result of a water clogged damaged motor we don't know.

He having car in in a month and will look at that first before going onto the roof motor. I'm supplying the parts and he has quoted £160+vat for the roof labour if it's a roof and motor out job.

That should be all in for £500 assuming the motor is the ultimate issue.

Not as scary a figure as I'd imagined!
 
And why does the sun come out as soon as my roof breaks?! Looked like a lovely day for the roof down!
 
All sorted now - thumbs up to Peter at Autotech.

Motor was a bit the worse for wear.

Hopefully the good weather remains now!

Did Peter supply a new motor and fit for £500 then ?
 
I sorted the motor and Autotech fitted.

Labour came to £168 Inc vat in the end but that included cdv delete.

He said it went very smoothly and was done in 3 as oppose the estimated 4 hrs, hence the cost being less than quoted - many would have still charged for 4hrs I'm sure.
 
Got a mate who works for a group of dealerships to get the motor for me. Just saved a few quid (although nothing too significant) over direct from BMW.
