Roof remote control

I've always thought that opening the roof remotely by holding down the open button puts more of a strain on the motor compared with opening the roof when the engine is running. Any truth to this?

The only extra load can only come from opening / closing while moving. Power consumption of the motor is identical if the engine is running or not. Only the battery level suffers if the engine isn't running.

I think to get full functionality of the roof system/Windows/mirrors is the Smarttop module is the only way - A BMW dealership tried to drill into the software to enable fob closure for me but the code was so deep/hidden (whatever the computer jargon is) that he couldn't get to it. Nor would Bmw help . The feature is important to me as due to a health problem I need the roof down to get in or out easily - yet still they said NO!

The Dealer said it was best to get the module!
When I change it will come with me

A forum member very kindly fitted mine (Thanks Titan) it's mainly trim removal and finding space to stow the module. It's best to set the module fron the pc prior to the install. The roof/widows/mirrors then work how the car should have been when it left the factory .

It really is a straight forward fit as the manual suggests - just go and buy one, you wont regret it!

Well I'm back in Blighty and guess what, the roof does go down with the key as you say Mr Wilks  SWMBO isn't too fussed about closing it so I'll leave the smart top for now but thanks for all your help  does anyone know if the feature where to half push the indicator stalk and they flash 3 times is just a coding thing?

I'm sure there's a setting for that in the iDrive. Mine does that anyway.

Yes, it's a setting made in idrive - it's so long since I did mine that I can't remember where!

I'm going to have to start reading the book again - new car in a few weeks!

If you don't have iDrive I'm sure there will be another way to do it using the stalks and menu.

Mine doesn't have Idrive. It's a 2010 so I assume before its introduction

I'm new on the Zed ladder and trying to get the boss sold on them so I can climb the ladder further  is your order firmed up now?

Yes !
The fella phoned this evening and ive got the must haves - I would have preferred the coral red but it's been pointed out that the black still looks good. - the current car is DSB and Black and I love it - wasnt too sure about the mineral grey and black but in sure it'll be fine!
Thanks for asking

Altough I'm at codger age with white hair, I still enjoy my z4 and haven't got to the Merc/Lexus convertable stage just yet!

Mine is 2009 and has iDrive it's just an option, some have it, some don't.
I'll off to BMW tomorrow to continue the corrosion saga so I'll see if they can show me the menu

Well done
I love the grey and IMO you cant go wrong with black leather. Coral is nice but a marmite colour I think and I blow hot and cold on it. They say your as old as the woman you feel or the car you drive so stay out of the Mercs

Yep, it can be done as ours is a 2010 and flashes 3 times with a quick flick of the stalk. We dont have idrive.
I assumed that this was standard as our Mini done it and the X6 also does it although it can be changed in the idrive.
Im sure I saw it somewhere in the manual, but I have been wrong before.

Triple turn signal is an option selected from the left control stalk. There's a whole section on the functions of this stalk in the owners manual but even without reading the manual you can cycle through the options for a fairly understandable graphic/options list on the binnacle display.

It's why it's there. I read mine front to back several times to commit it to memory so I was never stuck to understand anything while in the car.

Top post lads... just cleaned the car ths morning and tested it, roof comes down a treat. Is it normal for the windows to stay down when done this way?
