Roof question

Hi all

I’m helping out a mate with some engine and mechanical issues on his z4. He drove down to me with the roof down but then couldn’t close the roof. The red emergency release in the boot is broken and the pump is in its original location.

I’ve chucked a roof cover over it while I sort the engine and other mechanical issues.

My question is, can the roof motor be removed from its housing whilst the roof is down? I may try and get it out for him i can press the bypass switch to manually close the roof.

Thanks

Very fiddly to do tbh. You’d need to left the side of the roof but you can’t access the bolts round the rear edge.
If you get one each side and take it really slowly: lift a bit then wait for the pressure to dissipate, then a little more and so on. Could take ten minutes but don’t force it or you could burst a pipe or worse mess up the seals in the hinge. Once it’s fully up you should be able to press the button and get the front to lock.
I can’t emphasise enough how slow and careful you should take it though.

Do you know why it won’t close? Any codes? Any lights on the roof buttons?
Try selecting it down again, then up.

no codes for the roof, we can hear the pump but I think the bypass is partially pressed in when the remaining Bowden cable was pulled without the red lever. We can lift it manually 1/4 of the way then there is resistance.

What would be the best solution in this situation?

When you press the close button, the red light flashes. Since the roof is open, the red light stops flashing when it latches on the rear lock.

OK, only option right now is to lift it that quarter of the way until you feel resistance, then hold it there a little while until you can move it a bit further, and so on. If the bypass is partially depressed then the pressure will bleed past it, but very slowly. Be patient.

Also, do you have someone else there who could pull on the cable with a pair of pliers while you lift the roof?

Ok thanks yes i can do that, will get a helping hand to pull the cable and I will be patient with it. Once I’ve done the mechanicals, I will send him your way for a full fix if that’s ok?

Where are you? No point heading all the way to Norfolk if closer to @Number5 in Bristol, @bigwinn in Lincoln or @Street in Newcastle.
