wife and I fancy doing a bit or a tour in the e89 next month,
If the weather is good ,roof down My worry is what can be done if the roof is down and wont lift to closed position, Is there some frigg you could do to help you get it closed.Or if it stops whilst opening ,whats the procedure to get it close until you could fix it? Salmon relays are new .

There aren’t any real frigs unless you start to put some hot wires in to circumvent certain switches and sensors,,if you’re that concerned you’d preemptively swap them all out…

I carry a short cabin only outside cover for such a rainy day..

Cheers thanks for you time and patience

I’m not sure if that was sincere or dry wit… :tumbleweed:

Your worry should be fitting all of your things in it with the roof down!

Or getting them out again if you can’t get the roof open!

You can hang garment bags behind each seat. We used to get most the clothes in there, then the boot was free for a couple of bags. Enjoy, it’s a lovely touring car. :driving: :driving:

That’s a good tip…I’ll try that..

So if the roof stopped on the opening position there is no way of moving it to either open or closed. By may be releasing hydraulic pressure to allow manual movement, the idea of being stuck in wales with mid op roof that can’t be moved strikes me with even more fear 😳

You can release the hydraulic pressure at the valves..be careful not to damage them..if the roof is unlocked then it’s possible..usually if a fault appears it possible by waiting and prodding the roof buttons that you can with perseverance get the roof to a locked point..

First of all, I would suggest you purchase Bimmergeeks ProTool software. At least the diagnostic portion. You can use it with an android tablet or phone. No phone service is required. With this you can diagnose the problem and you can also unlock the boot, which otherwise will be a problem. If your top gets stuck midway, you won't be able to open the boot by normal means. So, you won't be able to get to the hydraulics.

Most roof convertible top problems will result in a code. For instance A68B (left roof panel closed microswitch). Note, You also have A68D which is the right side. Well, this problem is typically a broken wire. If you short both micro switches together (pin 7 & 10) on the CTM connector you problem will be temporally solved. The same will be true for A690 and A692, which is left and right rear module closed microswitches. I believe this will be pin 9 and 11 shorted together.

Even if you don't wish to delve in this deeply, at least with diagnostic software you can ask for intelligent guidance if you do get stuck.
Btw, remember to keep OBD2 cable or bluetooth adapter in the glove box and not the boot...

Personnally, I have prepared an emergency convertible top repair kit, which I keep in the boot. Contains a spare hall sensor and spare microswitch. I can jumper these in if necessary to fool the system rather than repair the problem on the road. Also, contains jumper wires.

Well, here is something to start your kit. Print it and put it in your glove box.

It’s not like the roof fails that often. It’s happened to me once and it was still able to open close, just it developed a temperamental personality.

Enjoy the car, and if bad things happen deal with them at the time.

thanks for the image, which pins do people frig or remote switch to trick the roof then?

There's no simple one size fits all way of tricking the roof. You need a proper code reader to know what's wrong with the roof. Only then, can you know which sensor or microswitch is the problem and what options you have. You really need a proper code reader, like ProTool .
