Roof problems self inflicted

I appreciate that there are roof experts out there. But with some help I should be able to fix this.
Why can’t I turn those handles?
 
"I would guess the shelf is down already otherwise the roof wouldnt have dropped originally. The resistance on the shelf knobs is because you are trying to lift against the roof thats sat on it.
To start with, You need to unlatch the roof from the rear bulkhead, pull the red hoop and manually get the roof atleast to the half way point and then see if the buttons will operate in either direction"

Do you mean the roof un latches by pulling the red hoop? If not how do I unlatch the roof?
Can I not turn the handles because the roof is down?
Do they only turn when the roof is up?
 
The black handles wont turn when the roof is down.Two people ie one either side should be able to lift the roof up slowly,there will be quite some resistance.I had to do it with mine when the motor packed up.
 
Update on this. I have now raised the roof manually and lowered it a few times. With the roof up and everything hunky dory, windows up car locked Pressing the roof down button does the following
Roof unlatches from the top of windscreen as normal
Windows come down half way as normal
Whirring noise for a few seconds behind driver side as per normal
But roof will not start to come down
Cannot hear any other noises
By releasing Bowden cable in boot I can manually put the roof down and up again.
Is battery voltage critical here?. I have 12.5 volts at a the terminals. Battery now on charge.
 
Just such a coincidence. Everything working fine. Roof never struggled to open/close. Then I replace a faulty gaptech and the motor goes????

Surely you have to allow for the possibility that the GapTech wasn't faulty and the hot/cold behavior you were noticing was actually the motor on its last legs...?
 
When the gaptech failed a couple of times in extreme hot weather, the roof opened and closed perfectly using the console buttons.
I just can’t see the link your making.
Maybe I’m being thick. But there has to be a way for me to test the motor?? Feel like I could pay a lot of money for a new motor and it still wouldn’t work.

Sorry - I didn't see anything in your 'Gap tech in hot weather' thread that indicated that the roof still worked using the console buttons...

Contact the roof motor relocation guys - I'm sure at least one of them has operated the motor outside of the car in a bucket of ?oil? to free up a seized/reluctant motor, so they should be able to explain the process
 
Ok roof motor still not working. Not a sound after the roof unlatches and Windows come half down.
I am almost resigned to taking the roof off to test the motor but just want to try everything else first.
I have noticed that when I raise the shelf in the boot I cannot get the yellow led to flash. I thought that with the shelf up the yellow led flashed? Now this microswitch in the boot isolates the motor does it not?
 
From memory, if shelf is in up position it won't drop windows or unlatch from top of windscreen, but the switch comes out easy enough if you just want to bypass it to prove a point
 
What your describing is exactly what happened to mine .... though I didn’t replace anything.... but suddenly from working ok , nothing.... as you said, front unclips... windows drop ... then silence from behind .... def sounds like a dead moter ... but see bowser.... he managed to revive mine and moved it to boot.... he’s very reasonable and a real wizard.
 
Just to close this thread. Had the roof motor resuscitated and relocated last night by Ross. Really neat job.
I took a bit of convincing that it was the roof motor simply because coincidentally the motor gave up at the exact same time I was soldering in a gaptech. So I was convinced I had buggered something up.
Anyway the good news is I fully understand the workings of a zed roof.
Thanks for your patience and help.
