Roof problem

Hi Newbie here!

I've got a 03 Z4 with an electric roof. Recently it's stopped working, before I take it to the garage I thought I'd check with you guys for advice.

The catches wirl open and the roof is ready to fold back but the motor that pulls it back doesn't kick in.
This leads me to think it might be just a fuse gone (or wishful thinking).

I've always helped it along as it wasn't very strong (I wonder if this helped break it!).

Any ideas?

Dan

run a search on motor failure. Symptoms sound all too familiar.

Sounds like its been on its way out for some time.

Thanks guys - most motor probs seem to still make noises so hoped it might be fuse/loose wire but I better bite the bullet and take it down to the garage.

Luckily I have a good indy in Bristol

Still waiting for the part to arrive, but i took the roof off today out of boredom and the motor is well and truely rusted/corroded. I cleaned out the drains too and they were full of crap.

When cleaning out the drains you dont need to remove the wheel or the whole inner arch, just the small plastic arch with the 3 screws and it has one underneath. then you can wiggle your hand in and get at the drain plug.

The roof wasnt too hard a job, ill post a full how to and loads of pictures when i do it all.

Cool, I'm hoping you have limited knowledge as I do on cars?? How long should I anticipate for the roof to come off?

Serious word of warning with the roof (I did mine last weekend!):

Do not get the white gunky sealant from where the rubber weather strip was attached onto the roof fabric!!!! This stuff is like chewing gum, and the autoglym roof cleaning kit won't even touch it.

Unfortunately when removing the roof it dropped back into the stuff :headbang: I should have cleaned it off the edge of the boot first.

Believe it or not, in the end I had to resort to the best product for cleaning sticky stuff - WD40. That removed it from the roof fibres, then I used the AG roof cleaning kit, and it is now like new.

A worrying few hours though trying to get it out!

I had the same issue as you koolchris99 - motor side drain blocked and full of water. Is your motor mount bracket broken too? The plastic casing is held on a single screw through a thin strip of plastic. When I replaced the motor casing with the new one I added a cable tie through the wider slot in the motor case mount for extra security.

Also it is a nightmare getting the clips for the rear shelf back in after replacing the roof. There is no where to get your hands/arms in for the rear clips! I had to bend my arm round the roll bars into the boot to clip them in!

Hey all,

I just got my z4 today and previously when I test drove it the roof worked perfectly. However, now I'm home I can't get it to open apart from unlatching itself initially. It won't continue to open. A red light near the button flashes. Have you got any idea if I might be doing something wrong or what the problem could be? Like I said it worked brilliantly just 1 week ago.

Thanks!

Brad

If you have a warranty take it back to the dealer and let them sort it out.
