Roof problem, thoughts?

I have been lurking a while but now I would like some help.

The roof on my partner's Z4 06 2.0 is being naughty.
I think the car is pre facelift, the rear lights have roundness.
I have browsed the site and looked through shipkillers pages.

Okay, what I know
1
the roof doesn't move when you press the open button
the roof doesn't move when you press the close button

the roof can be slowly pushed from open to closed if you have your finger on the open button
the roof can be slowly pushed from closed to open if you have your finger on the close button

the catches on the windscreen release when open is pressed but the roof does no more
the catches on the windscreen do not engage unless the ignition is switched off and on

4
the roof catch above the storage compartment does disengage when open is pressed
the roof catch above the storage compartment doesn't engage unless the ignition is switched off and on

5
the micro-switch seems to work because the front catches will release.

from browsing the site the choices seem to be battery, switchgear, pump, hydraulics, sensors.
BMW have two pumps on their books, one for 300 quid, a second for a grand.

I am thinking I need to replace the pump but I would love it if anyone could confirm from my info that it is the right choice.

If not already done I should check that the shelf in the boot is secured properly in the lower position, a sound well charged battery is fitted and all catches, hinges and pivot points on the roof frame are lubricated with a touch of light oil (lube sorted mine).

I can't recall the meanings but the colour of the lights on the buttons when you press them indicate either a fault, or the shelf out of place. Is the roof motor running when you press?

sometimes the light was blinking sometimes it wasn't.
I cant remember which when.
I will take a pen and paper and note the state of the buttons through each operation.
The roof was uncertain yesterday so I lubricated the joints this morning.
It worked for two more cycles and stopped.

- I am a bit deaf and I had the engine running
- i will get a proper set of ears to listen.

microswitch
- I checked the partition position is okay
- I poked it with a finger tip and it felt positive
- I think it works
- I will check the button lights tomorrow against both parcel shelf positions.

parcel shelf up orange light shows when open pressed nothing happens

parcel shelf lowered open pressed catches on front disengage normally, constant red light
flickering light when catches disengaged and button released
press close and catches on front engage normally

No pump noises heard

I guess I check the fuse next?

I am fearing the motor is duff but there is a slight complication. (of course)
Yesterday it almost started working again - it half shut and then stopped.
Could the bypass have been dislodged and not reset properly?

Arrrrgh - I was within a few mins of ordering a new motor-
Now I am muttering to myself again.

and another thing

I have to put some muscle into moving the roof by hand -
it shifts ten inches and stops - pause push hard - another few inches - pause .....

Which means the pump, seals, rams, are fine but the motor is whirring silently away as I power the hood?
Or the rams are knacked and I am slowly pushing the rams up and down their channels as the pump tries to do exactly the same?

And I noticed a while back if you leave the hood in a halfway position it slumps back into the open position. Is this normal?

How exactly does a hydraulic roof mechanism work?
