Roof Operation

Hi Guys, new to this site and to the ownership of a Z4 so please forgive me if this has been asked before.

I have just purchased a 2011 (61 plate) Z4sDrive23i and was wondering if there is anyway I can operate the roof from outside the car. I have read the book and it talks about the "comfort" option and mentions the key and the fact that the key has a battery if this option was fitted so is it just the key that is needed or will there need to be other bits that I would need?

She seems to have most options and is the Sport version.

I know on the earlier models you could buy an after market kit that allows one touch and use from the key fob so is this available for the E89?

Cheers for your replies in advance.

Hello and welcome, my Z4 is long gone now but if i remember try holding down the unlock button on the fob give it 5 or so seconds, this worked on mine with the comfort access, worth a quick try. Steve

Hmmnn, slightly confused now as the roof went down when I held the open button and everything worked but when I tried to lock and put the roof up it would not work - only locked the car? My key fob is not the comfort fob as there is no place for a battery only the internal one that charges up from the key being in the ignition slot?

Yes won't put it back up again only down , others have more experience but think smart top module may do that, i will stand corrected though. So to recap your key is working correctly in my opinion . Steve

Correct. Roof UP from the key fob requires 'Comfort Access' option. (or an aftermarket Smarttop module).

You can put the key in the door lock and turn the key, this will raise the roof.

This only works on cars with older software. Those with recent software won't do this as it was stopped as part of the security update that attempted to stop key cloning via OBD

Ah ok. Must admit i only ever did it once on my old car. Never tried on my new one.

Putting the roof down is fine from the key fob, not bothered that it wont put it back up so kind of a result lol

Until one fine day when the car is parked up and then it starts to rain!

Don't ask me how I know!

Smarttop, the only way to go - I've yet to hear of anybody fitting one and say that they wish they hadn't bothered!
