Roof Operation Whilst Driving

Hi there,
The gentleman in this YT vid says, "you can now open and close the roof at 40kmph".
I was wondering if this is a new feature for 2013+ models?
Did previous Z4s have this feature, or could you only operate the roof whilst stationary?

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

cheers.

My roof is bog standard. I have to be stationary when it starts moving, but I can drive off whilst it's opening or closing. No idea how fast as I don't have enough hands to drive, hold the roof button and change gear, at the same time.

Until the facelift the roof could only be operated when the car was stationary or very very low speed like 1/2mph. The facelift brought a new upgraded pump to allow the roof to be opened and closed whilst the car was in motion but only up to 25mph.

Earlier cars can use an aftermarket 'smarttop' module which would allow the roof to open and close whilst in motion as well as introducing one touch roof opening and closing as well as a host of other features.

My LCI roof def operates at up to 25mph. My pre LCI roof def didn't operate unless stationary or, as Angie says, moving only a tiny, tiny bit.

Just for your info the ECU will record the speed the roof is raised or lowered at if over the manufacturers limits - I know this as one of my sensors was faulty and said the roof was open when I was travelling at *cough* speed .... which the BMW tech laughingly told me when he downloaded the error code. The speed he told me it recorded I was doing was accurate - and it is not getting published here but I can confirm was over 25mph :?

Original max roof operational speed was 5mph. Even at 25mph with facelift or smarttop it still feels like a crawling speed and is really only useful at traffic lights if you're roof is in operation when the lights change.

My advice is to not operate when moving.

Did it a couple of times and the having to hold your finger on the button can be problematic if you need your hand for anything else :D

Only time being able to open the roof when loving has been useful is when it's started raining on the M8 at hearthill. I've managed to pull off into the services, slow down to 15/20mph enough so the roof can raise whilst I travel the short distance until it's time to join the motorway again.

Could be a candidate for typo of the year :D

Oh jings! Yes should have been moving. But you'd really need the roof down for that action too unless you want a sore back and a banging headache
