Roof operation - LCI Models

Does anyone with an LCI model regularly have the confidence to open or close the roof while the car is moving?

Driving in slow moving traffic yesterday, I got caught in a shower but it was also blowing a gale...instinctively I immediately looked for somewhere to pull over, which wasn't easy. Never thought about taking eyes off the road, finding the button on the lower centre console, keeping it pressed for so many seconds and changing a manual gear shift all at the same time.

I have done it once in my LCI moving in slow traffic when it started raining ... it feels odd as every other convertible I have had needed to be stationary. It is odd when the boot goes up - I imagine a gust of air tipping the car backwards !! It was fine though. I did it in the main to see it doing it. It must look odd to people behind.

I like the feature for when you get caught out - I got soaked in my 'old' black pre LCI 35iS on the A3 in slow moving traffic as there was no hard shoulder and nowhere to go !

The LCI roof at least makes staying dry possible. The time I tried it I guess I was doing about 15mph.

i have done it loads of times. previously in my 2012 z4 which allowed me to do it up to around 20mph and also in my current lci. never had any problems at all

A gust of wind is more likely to bend the mechanism than tip a 1.5 ton car!

I was joking ! :D

Been caught a couple of times but fortunately had the wife in the car to press the button whilst I tried to keep it under 25 mph :)

Done this several times without issue however I don't push the speed to its theoretical maximum for obvious reasons. A one touch operation would be handy (smart top device) however it doesn't appeal to me. I admire your ability to manually gearshift and operate the lid :)

Cheers

JC :D

We thought about buying one of the smart tops so the roof could be closed with the remote and closed while driving slowly but with the cost and complexity of the roof if there were any problems we decided not to get one.
I dont think I would risk operating the roof while moving at more than walking pace in case of damage especially with no warranty.

I use the smart top, there are no issues in the 2+ years I've used it. It adds numerous features, not just the speed thing. I operate the roof at a standstill whenever possible, using the operation while moving only for those moments where the lights turn green before its finished etc. You can then roll forward slowly, keeping cars behind happy ish while the roof completes.
