Roof movement impared / not latching properly (w/ SmartTOP)

In the last week, my car has started to report various problems related to the roof.

The roof fully opens without fault, but after pressing the close button - it begins to close and then stops half way through and says "roof movement impaired". I then need to press the button again to resume closing the roof.

Then, while driving - I seem to get the 'ping' sound occasionally and I see a "hard top not latched correcltly".

I can't visibly see any problems with the roof. I mean - it *looks* like it's closed properly and the mechanism seems to be working correctly. It seems almost as if the car computer is maybe getting incorrect information.

One thing worth noting is that the car has the SmartTOP module installed, however this has been working fine for months without any problems. These recent problems have only just begun.

I'm going to try disabling the SmartTOP module, but other than that, does anyone have any suggestions on what I should try? It's still under BMW Used Approved Warranty, so if I can't fix it myself, I'm just going to remove the SmartTOP module and take it back to them.

its probably gone out of alignment and a sensor is out of kilter.

there are tons of sensors, but best bet is to disable the Smart top as you have suggested. Its what i would do first of all to isolate the module.

disable smart top for a few days. If still happens, remove the module completely. Could be the module playing up, dodgy connection?

if it still errors, take it to the dealer and plead ignorance, like : :? or

So I removed the SmartTOP module today, but it didn't fix the problem - in fact, it's made it worse.

I am still getting "hard top not latched properly" messages while driving and additionally, the roof mechanism seems quite jerky now.

Sending it back to the BMW dealer tomorrow.

Thats a shame :( oh well see what the dealer says. I seem to remember a guy on ZPost had a problem with the roof stuck partially in the boot with a SmartTop installed. It could simply be a programming or microswitch issue.

I can't help but get the feeling that some kind of sensor has been knocked out of place. I have a hunch that the SmartTOP being the problem is a red herring, but I'll post an update once I get it back from the dealer.

The dealer has replaced the roof microswitch for free under warranty and everything appears to be working fine now.

I'll probably have a go at refitting the SmartTOP tomorrow - given that the issue was unrelated to the SmartTOP itself.

While I was in, they also replaced 2 cracked 296 alloys for free, updated the iDrive firmware, washed and valeted the car! :)

Nice one on the free idrive update, shame about the swirls they'll have left from washing it.....

Result!

Out of interest, did they upgrade the security fix while it was in and is your smartTOP still working after the upgrade?

See my post from today to see my smartTop problem that I'm looking to resolve - would appreciate any help you can give here.

There are a million and one threads about E89 roof problems on here, you just happen to have chosen an 11 year old one!

I have same issue recently on my 2011 e89 z4 and it's annoying is the switch easy to replace myself and can I buy one?

Probably best to start your own thread with the exact details, ie; at what stage your roof is stuck etc give as much detail as you can

Like an archaeological journey reading back through the post knowing what we know now.

What was the very first post and about what i wonder?

Well had a look, first time i bothered to look, discussion on when the, not know then, E85 ending and possible new model out.
I know when i bought my E89 the dealer said the car, May 2009, was ordered months before launch.
Being Orion silver i assume that and DSB the only colours available looking at promo vids.
