However, that said, I do make a point of opening and closing the roof every time I drive it, just to keep it moving. It lives with the roof up, drives with the roof down, as Im told thats best practice.

Def worth spraying some WD40 on the hinges! Now my estate has gone back ive decided to get a van for work instead so when i get that the Z will probably only get used in nice weather as ive decided driving it in the wet on crap days just isnt fun for me and id rather put the mileage on a work vehicle than my own :D

Yeah flys up and down now! Was a struggle getting in back in tho did it last night was a learning curve tbh but now i know would be much easier i wish i got your number now would of needed some help! My Dad helped me loads tho! should of taken it out with him would of been better! The motor was going the wrong way so swapped the cables at the plug was easier than taking it all out again!

Glad its sorted mate. :thumbsup: Good thinking on swapping the plugs around. How is the recon? does it sound louder to you than the original and does it move as quick?

Mine is quite loud, opens very fast @5 secs but slightly struggles on closing @ 10 - 12 secs.

Recon seems fine the guy i spoke to was brilliant when i ordered one. Im guessing opening will always be faster. It sounds the same but just much quicker no struggle at all will take a video of it later still need to put the trim back on etc.
 
Not gonna be sending my old motor back Dan, the warranty is not worth anything. Obviously not covered for water ingress which is to be expected. But not covered for electrical problems! :o If the motor does pack up within the year then they will obviously argue that point, either drive the car up to them or get a BMW tech to do a report and we know how much that would cost.

They get ours back recon them, give us £30 and sell them again making @ £200 off each!

So i am getting my old motor reconned for, i have been quoted @ £40. And then have a spare motor just in case. :thumbsup:
 
Well i'm not in any hurry to take my roof off again! Not a bad idea actually anywhere you can get the motor and pump reconned?

Just do the motor yourself; unbolt from the hydraulic unit, spray in some WD40 to get going, then submerge in a diesel bath (5L ice cream tub is perfect) and run both ways for about 15 mins. Loads of crap comes out and the motor pulls like a train afterwards.
Alternatively go my 'Motor ala Bake' route and after spraying in loads of WD40, wrap in tin foil and bake in a warm oven for about 15 mins, spray in more WD40 afterwards, then run in air for about 5 minutes each way.

Geo, this is how it all started, i posted my progress in your original post, remember? I copied your example, I have done the baking, the diesel, the lot! So, i BLAME YOU! AND YOUR BRILLIANT POST!!!

If it wasn't for you i would still be happily putting my roof up and down by hand. YOU SCOUNDREL!!! :lol: :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

Having said that, my motor was definitely on its last legs, i had the roof out 5 times trying to keep the old fella alive but it finally bit the dust! So decided on replacement. :thumbsup:
 
Reading about yours tug that's why I went down the route of just replacing it hopefully now I won't have an issues. Just fitted all the trim back on etc this trim set I bought is worth it's weight in gold! Now I got to get rises clips back in on the parcel shelf!
 
What trim set did you get mate? Also, if you find an easy way of re fitting the shelf clips please let me know cos that has always had me stumped! just left mine off for now.
 
If you straddle the seats roof up shelf down its actually really easy just use your hand to find the holes they pop in that was one thing I thought would be a nightmare! Just got it off eBay this one I think http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/391101971795?nav=SEARCH very useful putting the weather strip back in and obviously no damage to paint work etc. Bought it for when I changed the stereo. Everything is back together and looks good. Now all I need to do is get my new wheels on.

I'm trying to wait till next month as my bank account has taken a bit of a hit this month but I'm already close to just buying them next week lol see if I can control myself!

agreed, would be handy for people to use as reference and even help people to maintain/trouble shoot there faulty roofs :thumbsup:

I have just done mine and Tug is correct, inside the motor casing it is filled with a foam lining which gets wet and stays wet even if the water is draining through which mine was not, Whilst doing mine I drilled several small holes in the bottom to aid the water drainage as a modification.

I can thoroughly recommend any help Tug offers you, he was a godsend when I did mine recently, talking me through the procedure via several phone calls, mine now works like new and at zero cost!!,

Its just a bit time consuming and needs to be done in order.

Tempting as it is to drill the bottom of the motor housing to let water out, what you're actually doing is giving easy access to water getting in and soaking the acoustic foam from the bottom up. What is really needed is some kind of small one-way valve like a self bailer on a boat, but failing this the best route is to properly seal the motor housing with silicone and finish the job that BMW should have done in the first place.
 
It really annoys me that so many of us are now affected by this issue which is quite clearly a manufacturing/design defect and is not a cheap or easy fix. BMW should be held responsible here..... just my two cents :headbang:
