Roof Motor

Try putting the motor in the oven on a low bake (70) for a couple hours, drying it out may revive it :thumbsup:
 
As you have gone to the trouble of removing it yourself, is it worth relocating it into the dry boot area to save the agro in future ?

Im sure there is a thread on here somewhere where someone has done this.

Just a thought.

I'm going to leave it in the same place but will buy a new motor. Might make the drain hole bigger will have a think during the week.

Ive detached the motor from the pump and ran it off a 12vdc psu seemed to spin nicely now its not soaked in water and dried up abit.
I reattached it to the pump and applied power nothing happened.
Im assuming the pump has to be stood up straight to operate thinking about it? So might have to try again but sadly im away all week :(
Also i noticed where to shaft joins to the pump the bit inside seems loose anyone know if this is right?

I think others have revived their roof motors by running them in a tub of diesel for a while, if it's just waterlogged it could be worth a go?

Im tempted too it doesnt seem as bad as others ive seen. Im more worried about the pump at the moment unsure of if the tank needs to be full of fluids i have no idea about hydraulics!

Tbh i wouldn't know the standard of the refurbishment but i did deal with Graham last year & found him a decent chap .
Offers a fitting service on site but means waiting 4/6 hours in Bradford :cry:
 
I've always thought about offering a refurb service to save members money and just charge labour for fitting instead of a new motor but guaranteeing the life of the motor once refurbed puts me off seeing as you get a 2 year warranty on the new motor from BMW.
 
I managed to get the whole unit from roof motors for 250 plus 30 back when I send the old one back makes sense rather than take the risk.

Dan, when you say nothing happened, do you mean the motor still spins but no movement from the roof? If so have you re-seated the boden cable?

Thanks for the reply Mr Wilks. I ordered mine on saturday then coincidentally read your post the next day. I am just going to fit it myself, wont take long, Ive had my roof out 4 times now, and getting pretty nippy at it. :thumbsup:

Yeah put the cable back in I'd rather just spend the money get it right now and fingers crossed not have this issue again as its garages during the week and I have a hardtop for the summer. Also when I wash it I don't touch the roof. Thinking about making the drain hole bigger and threading some string through it so I can clear the drain easy. Hopefully get it all back together and working this weekend luckily for me my dad's a car mechanic :D
