Hi guys and gals can anyone please tell me if its possible at a glance to check out the roof motor for water damage from the drains, not sure if I'm up to removing panels and so on. 2004 E85 3.0 se

Thanks

Sounds like hard work to me, why did the designers of the z4 make it so hard for us (lets see O! yes! money grabbing)

You can look with an endoscope between the roof inside the waterwell where also the roof motor sits.
If you see a lot of dirt&debris and signs of a high waterlevel (visible waterline on the sides) than that is a sign for possible water damage.

The drains get clogged due to poor cleaning maintenance and uncareful parking (under trees etc.)

Think i will check it all next weekend sounds like an expensive job to me if water gets in. I live in Nottingham anyone know a good Garage within an hours drive I don't mind traveling for the right garage.

One way of finding out would be to gently pour some water over the side of the roof by the windows without it coming over the body works and see where it pours out. If it comes out by the rear wheel arch then you know your drains are clear.

Looks like roof motor has died. Looking at forum there was an excellent DIY thread by Shipkiller, however the photos are no longer available. Does anyone have a copy of the thread that they can post onto the Forum? 2006 version.

There's a shipkiller pdf here on how to replace the motor.
