Hi all, Having an issue with my roof motor where it will go down alright but no luck on it going back up. Anybody know what the issue could be or if anybody can repair them locally to stoke on trent or a postal repair service?

When its not going up is it making a noise?

Is it still in its original location or has it been relocated?
 
My personal favourite with the roof, double triple check the mirco-switch / roof tray.
 
Either one direction on the pump has failed (new pump needed) or the red hoop pulled slightly and the bypass valve maybe partially engaged, thus loosing pressure as fast as the pump tries to generate it.
 
Is it possibly that the fluid level is marginal? Enough to lower it with gravity helping but not enough to push it back up.
 
I’ve checked the fluid level and it above the line while In it’s lowered position. I feel it could be a failed pump in one direction as number5 mentioned. Looks like I’ll be on the hunt for a new one.

Does the roof unlock in the down position?

If so, I would pull out the manual cable put the roof half way up by hand and then disengage the manual cable and see if the pump picks of the last part.

My pump was a complete mess when I bought the car and didn't function correctly at all, but after some TLC and lots of elbow grease she is back in perfect order. So I don't think these fail so easy that they just work one way.
 
does it go up at all? and if so is it a case that the windows drop, roof goes up to a certain point and then just stops dead and drops back on its own weight
 
With the top down, try to bring the top up without using the emergency release handle. If it's hard but moves slowly up then it's more than likely a failing hinge lifter seal. This means your hydo system is no longer fully pressurized and can not lift the weight of the roof. However, if lifting the roof is almost rock solid, then the pump on the motor has more then likely failed.

The attached video has a tech changing out a top motor on a Z4. Go to 4:10, you can hear motor running but, the top won't move and can't be pushed down even manually. Since the top can't be brought down even manually the hydo system is good and pressurized. Since you can hear the top motor running, it means that although the motor is good, the pump attached to the motor must have failed.

Since the motor has already been relocated to your trunk/boot I'm guessing you've already checked the brass bearing in the pump which ties into the emergency release to make sure it isn't slightly jammed.
