roof motor warranty

Hi, I know it's an old chestnut but I went to drop the top on my 07 plate 3.0 si to clean the window and the latch motor operated but nothing else, lucky it relatched, took it to the dealers today as I paid to extend the warranty for the last two years.
They have checked it, cost '£78.00' and they informed me it is water ingress so the warranty does not cover it, it would on the original warranty but not the extended one, they consider it fair wear and tear. They want £1500.00 to renew motor, hydraulics and pipes.
As it's winter I will not be dropping the roof so I will pick it up tomorrow pay the £78.00 and think of my options in the spring, anyone know a good indy that will do the job for a reasonable price?
Looks like my BMW extended warranty did not cover what I hoped it would.

So the bad design puts an electric motor near to water running past it and it gets water ingress so its your fault not theirs. Fair wear and tear my arse!!

I hate warranties that aren't worth a damn. :x

have a word with bmw uk

they will probably good will the motor if you have a full service history.

don't give up yet

Quite a few on here have had the job done at an indy for between £600 and £700.

Why are you giving the stealer £78 if they haven't done anything except tell you they won't do it under warranty? There's no way they have had the roof of and properly checked the motor for water ingress then put it all back together again for £78 labour. They know it's probably water ingress due to the fundamental design flaw.

That's about what it cost me, bought the motor and housing from Sopers Lincoln and had my local guy replace it. GreyZed is right though, you can't tell for sure unless you take the roof off so that £78 charge is taking the pi55.

I'd kick up a fuss, I'm sure someone's had there motor replaced under the extended warranty. They'll always try to reject the claim first off.
If your car got full service history you could alway try and ask for good will.

Good Luck

Yep, always (sadly you have to) fight things like this. I had the same with faulty rear lights 'its water ingress'. Well I certainly didn't pour water in so how is that my fault. Bad design, they should stump up, end of. I got my lights replaced/fitted FOC after a short 'discussion' with BMW UK.

It's absolutely worth approaching BMW UK customer services for compensation but they will never accept liability for what is frankly an appalling design flaw but they do give out goodwill gestures, oh and the dealers nearly always go down the water ingress route.

I had my roof motor replaced by a BMW dealership and I was under the BMW Insured Warranty. Dealership and Mondial washed their hands of any responsibility, the dealership warranty manager was a disgrace and Mondial just refused to move at all.

Wrote to BMW UK and sent them copies of all correspondence between myself and Mondial and made it clear that I would pursue the matter to court if neccessary. BMW decided to refund me as a goodwill payment.

Just to rub salt into the wound, it then took another 2 weeks to get the money from the dealer as the "warranty manager was too busy to do the refund", something about preparing financial accounts for the end of month. Absolutely abysmal treatment which is a shame as he's letting down the rest of the staff who are some of the best I've come across.

With the roof done the warranty has now paid for itself and I've not renewed it, it will go to a decent indy from now on.

Good luck

Dave

As above, go direct to BMW UK, it worked for me. Have a look at past threads on the subject, I know more members have had success this way.
Best of luck, and keep pushing they will give in as previous payments suggest a precedent in now set

Sorry for the delay but was moving house before Christmas so all this went on the back burner, finally got round to writing to CEO customer services listing the problem and my concerns.
Final reply was to take it to local dealers and pay for an investigation report and they would look at a goodwill gesture.
Dropped it off Tuesday and gave the dealers a copy of the letter from BMW, today they said the car was ready new motor fitted and my contribution was £250, BMW paid the rest. All in all a good result, even with the warranty I would have had to pay £100.
The roof drains were blocked and the motor under water.
Many thanks to all who told me to keep trying and also Thanks to Lloyds in Newcastle, much better attitude than the dealers in Hampshire.

Excellent result ,had a similar discussion last year ,was in my Dealer and another member was having the same issue and response .Picked it up whilst on iPad ,so
I discussed with Dealers warranty specialist and he said there was no such exclusion in the BMW extended warranty and invited the member to bring car to them but he was in N.Wales so not really viable
However he persued it and also got the issue fixed finally .
