Roof Motor ??'s

Hi All,

New here with 2009 Z4...top just stopped working.

Shelf is down, silver clip is activating..

Push button, windows go down, top unlatches

I hear a humming noise coming from rear motor

Top doesn't go down....manually push top down, and hold switch
until cycle 'completes'...

Try to close top with switch, and motor makes humming noise,
but top doesn't move.

If the motor is bad, does it still make noise ?? Not opposed
to dismantling top to replace motor, just want to make
sure that I only have to do this job once !
Thanks in advance !!

I guess the humming could be the motor trying if its seized/seizing.
Either way, I would be checking the oil and consider removing for an overhaul

Yes Steve, exactly, there was a thread just last week on here where someone had bought one or posted a link to an advert for an E85 on an 09 plate .

Red handle is in correct position....motor does give a very little bit of assist in closing.....Guess I'll have to remove the top & take a peek....

If the motor is waterlogged when you get it out, don't chuck, with some TLC with WD40/and a gentle bake in a warm oven, they can be brought back to life, it's just that being expected to work while sitting in a bath of rusty water is a big ask.
The expensive acoustic foam can be simply washed in fairy liquid and dried before reusing.

When you reassemble make sure you seal properly with silicone and clean the roof drains from the top before putting back in.

No :poke: don't wash the foam, don't seal the assembly with silicone.
Just put the bloody roofmotor in the boot, otherwise you might have the same problem in a coupe of years.

Not enough oil motor? Check his level.

My 56 reg Z4 roof is doing exactly the same, windows go down, roof unlatches, motor is going full pelt but nothing moves. Bowden cable is in the correct position (although it feels very stiff) How do I check the oil levels?

The Hydraulic Fluid reservoir is on top of the motor, under the roof so impossible to get at without taking the roof off. This is why everyone relocates it to the boot when the first opportunity arises.

Where are you located, someone may help you?

Thank you for the reply.... I think having it relocated is something I will have to have done....
Was just hoping that as the motor was revving its little head off that it might be the Bowden cable. When the cable is closed should the loop hang down vertically or lie horizontal?

I'm in the Greater Manchester area, so any advice would be much appreciated, as some garages have been known to take the mick when they see a female walking in!!

Leroy - if your in Manchester, Id take a drive to the guy in Cumbria who relocates them for £80.
Its a pleasant drive and £80'rather than£700 at a local Dealership. Even if you have a night away its still a good deal.
Look for Cherym's post for details.

David the mechanic who does the relocation is just outside Durham not in Cumbria.Everyone who has been to him so far has been there and home the same day with no problem.
His details are on my post.

The cable should not " hang " at all . The red loop pull handle has a shaft section before it turns into cable only . This red shaft section locates in an outer sleeve on the end of the outer cable . When you operate the red handle you pull on it gently and it comes out of sleeve slightly ( you can't see cable only the red loop handled shaft ) you then twist the red handle through 90 degrees and release it back into the sleeve ( the cable is under Spring tensions so when you pull it out turn it and release it it should go back in the sleeve under its own tension ) if you look at the sleeve you will see that pulling the red handle out and twisting it 90 degrees and releasing it puts the handle in the sleeve in a pulled out position . This action operates the bypass value on the pump, if your cable is hanging it's possible that the other end of the cable had come detatched or the cable is stretched or that it's broken , or simply that the bypass value is seized or stuck . There is an adjusted on the cable if you follow it back from the handle towards the pump, might be worth checking that too . If you want ring me and I will try and talk you through options you can check . 07771847714 Bryan

Thanks for the reply Brian.
My cable is really tight and it was just the red loop that I was wondering about - sorry I probably didn't explain myself very well....
I am now wondering if it is my hydraulic fluid that has gone as I have noticed a patch on the bottom corner of the outside of the roof near to the door and above where the motor sits. The patch isn't wet so I am wondering if it could be oil..... Michelle
