Roof motor replacement

I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to maintenance on my Z4, and last year I was really screwed over by a garage near London Bridge, so I'm a bit hesitant about getting any work done on the car.

I was getting the car MOTd today and would you believe it, the motor on the convertible roof failed as I was leaving! The guys helped get it back up as they didn't have the time or parts to sort it today, but what sort of money should I expect to spend on getting the motor replaced?

Hi and welcome
Lots of threads for roof pump/motor failures try the search menu.
There used to be a 'how to' in the how to section also

There's a forum member that replaces roof members, IIRC for around £5-600. Look up Bowser on the members list.

I'm planning on a visit to him in the not too distant future.

Well, just in case others are interested, I just called BMW who quoted:

£99 for an investigation
£402.92 for a new Hydraulic motor
£445.60 for labour

So near enough £950.

I am a complete, total, untrained mechanic. I'm not bad a pulling things apart and putting them back together though. I've replaced a few iPhone screens and batteries, and built a pc in my time, so am alright with a screw-driver. But I guess pulling a car to bits is a different story!

How successful were you guys with replacing your own motor? I've seen the how-to on this and wonder if I might save myself £600 and do it myself...

There you go BeardyJon. Bowser isn't a million miles away from you and is much cheaper than BMW.
The roof motors are a nightmare and I always live in fear that one day it will go pop.

Hope you get it sorted swiftly.

As the motors are in a vulnerable position didn't someone out in Z4 land re locate them to the boot , sounds like a good idea to me :)
