Roof Motor Relocation

Hi Everybody

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in the Northwest or Midlands area to relocate the roof motor to the boot on a 2004 Zed?
I'm hoping to pick up my first Zed next week and it seems the most common downsides of owning a Zed is the timebomb that is the roof motor!
As i cannot park it in the garage, it would make sense to have this mod done asap before it becomes an expensive mistake.

Any suggestions or pointers would be much appreciated.

Hi, there is a guy near Durham that does it for about £80 as he has got so good at it I believe.
Someone might be along in a bit with a link to the tread which has his number or you could do a search for it.

Had mine done (down South though) this weekend - a must have mod imho, and like everyone else, leaves me wondering why BMW didn't stick it there in the first place.

Get in touch with Dave over in Durham, did mine the other week, best £80 I have spent on my car and a lovely drive as well In this case prevention is a hell of a lot cheaper than the price of cure when you have to replace the motor

They even left a space for it to sit in, here's mine, fitted by bowser

Thanks for the feedback people!

Judging by the response, it would seem Dave from Durham is the saviour for this well known problem. I have noted down his details and will be in touch soon, however the trip for me is over 150 miles away so thats abit for a drive, but if it needs to be done, them so be it!

Incidentally, where is Bowser located? Just wandering if he might be a tad nearer for me (South Manchester)

Until i get it sorted, i'm parking the car on my sloped driveway with the front higher than the rear. I read form a thread that through gravity, the water will hopefully drain itself away form the roof motor.

If the drains are blocked and the cavity where the motor sits is waterlogged parking nose up wont help.
The only way will be to park it upside down :D

Go and get it done 150 miles is not a long way for a very cheap £80 fix.

Bowser is in Hampshire, so a good 3 ½ hours from Manchester.

From experience, I woudln't park nose up - no idea if it helps the roof motor issue, but nose will will likely lead to rain water entering your boot..! Get the motor relocated asap and then get it in the garage!! Or if you're an infrequent user of the car, but have no garage, get a full car cover.

Yes i think this is a compulsory mod for all Zed owners.

Looking at it positively, the long drive will help me bond with the car and find out all its characteristics, and if theres anything im not sure about, i can always seek daves advice as i believe he is a top top mechanic as well.

Just had my oil service and inspection done at Daves this morning.
If you travel up on a morning you will be home by tea time and saved a lot of money like the others who travelled just dont get carried away on the motorway.

I drove to Durham from Lytham, worth the petrol and the sooner you go the cheaper it will be, don't forget if we believe the stay people everything goes up if we vote for BREXIT LOL

An old thread, but I bet theres loads of dead roof motors out there. Probably 2nd time around on those motors not relocated. Shocking design. Relocated mine yesterday myself. Not that difficult really just fiddly :headbang:

I am in Eccles Manchester in the week and Cleethorpes some weekends
I can help you move the motor to the boot have done both of my Z4's the first by removing the roof but did the second one through the boot, cost would be very reasonable

Re-posting this from another thread as I think it's am important point...

It really doesn't need to be such a worry to be honest. It's just a matter of habit forming - a simple test to pour a little water into the recesses with the roof down is all that is required. If it's doesn't immediately appear in front of the rear wheels then you need to clear the drain plugs. The first thing to do is remove the rubber bungs - this reduces the chances of the drains blocking by an order of magnitude. Ignore the comments about it increasing road noise - it makes no difference whatsoever.

There are other reasons for keeping the bungs clear other than the roof motor - if the buckets fill and overflow, then water can run in and soak the carpets behind the seats. Next it gets to the airbag control module and then you are in a world of pain.

So in some respects, having the motor relocated and then just completely ignoring the bungs is a BAD policy. Much better to pull the bungs and stop them filling up in the first place. You can buy small endoscope cameras for your smartphone for less than £20 on Amazon these days. Great for having a look how much debris you have down there as a starter for 10.

Saying that - for those that already have dead motors meaning you have to pull it out anyway, it makes sense to put it in the boot. But you should still keep the bungs clear!

Just to clarify, are you suggesting removing the bungs and throwing them away or checking they are clear and reinstalling ?

Remove them and chuck them in a drawer somewhere.

an old post I know. But great write up ducklakeview. or I wouldn't believe it was possible.
Just done mine. would be a lot easier with a trick or two-in hindsight. has taken me 4 hours .if I did it again I reckon on well less than an hour including shelf and carrier removal. my motor drowned 5 years ago !!. After the relocation Had a play with the old motor and got it to work again, but had already bought another motor. Just a note- you will still need to periodically clean the drain holes. Or suffer a flooded boot.
