Roof motor refurb?

Hello folks,has anybody had there existing roof motors refurbed? Or evem refurbed it thereselves? If so whats involved? Cheers
 
I once refurbed a roof motor from somebody else.
The only thing I did was dismantle the pump on top, and then run the electric motor for a while submerged in diesel (to get most of the rubbish out and diesel is a light oil ofcourse so it prevents/dissolves some rust).

Cleaning: (the diesel was already a bit dirty so thats not all residue from the motor)

But realise that not all corroded motors are in the same shape. This one was still pretty good (and it was easy to get running again), but some motors are in worse shape.
But if it runs again, and you give the bearing on the bottom side a drop of motoroil again, they're good to go imho. Just not as pretty anymore ;)
You can't dismantle the electric motor itself, unless you pry small metal tabs open, but it is a 'clunked' case. So closing it that it will hold may be difficult.

Be sure to submerge it completely in diesel before running, and when done first disconnect the battery and then take it out, or it can catch fire :fuelfire:
 
Thanks for the reply :thumbsup: i was going to take the motor out and give it to a motor rewind company that does all of our motors at work,i was thinking worse case senario the motor would end up useless,which is pretty much what it is at the moment,im surprised nobody offers an exchange service for refurbed motors!
 
There was a forum member who was buying old motors and he was planning to refurb them. I sold my old motor to him.

You mean to rewind the rotor with copper wire?

It's a very cheap mabuchi style motor (something you'd find in a cordless drill etc) with the bottom of the pumphousing clunked to it (if memory serves correctly), so there is not much to gain from that.

As a part it may be expensive, but that motor alone is a 2gpb unit (the pump is the expensive part). Mounting a new motor to the pump might be the best solution, but I don't know if you can loosen/separate the base of the pump from the motorcasing and mount it on a new motor (within reason). And you have to get a similar motor with similar axle style.

This kind of work isn't usually done on parts that cost new 300gpb or so. And a neat&tidy refurb part (that is with new motor) may be worth only 150gpb or less.
 
Hello...Thank you for the info and pics. I am in the process of doing my E85 and once I lifted the bearing out of the housing, with the center rotor piece, three small dowel pins fell out. They fit perfectly in three small holes inserting perpendicular to the rotor piece. I cannot see the purpose in these three pins which fit in all the way and do not protrude. Am I placing them in the wrong location?

Without some detailed pictures I really have no idea what you're talking about.
Bear in mind that you're kicking a 6 year old topic, so this is not something I did yesterday :lol:
(even at the time of my posts, those pictures were already 2 years old so apparantly I did this 8 years ago....)

I had the same happen to mine the pins do seem to goin the rotor dont know why but mine now working like this. Hope this helps :D
 
I have relocated the pump and motor in the boot after bringing my existing motor back to life all by following and adapting advice on this and other forums many thanks to you all. My one tip is make sure the hydraulic bypass valve operated by the red toggle in the boot is pulled out, you can gently pop it out with a small screw driver . Just have to tidy everything up now but completed without removing the roof :thumbsup:
