Roof motor problem?

Hello everyone, ive been lurking for a couple of months mainly searching for an answer to my roof problem :D ,ive got a 06 plate 2.0i and bought it knowing that it had a problem with the roof, the problem is when i press the roof down button the roof unlatches then stops, the light on the switch stays red and the roof motor keeps working away,i can push the roof down manually very easily(as if theres no resistance) and pull it back up just the same, then it latches into position no problem!the motor sounds realy smooth when running and theres no flashing lights, going to whip the roof off over the xmas hols and have a look, but i was hoping somebody might have a few pointers for me,cheers !

Before getting too carried away, be sure the manual release loop in the boot is in the correct position - pushed into the long slot of the guide tube. This is the red finger loop under the boot lid cowl.

thanks for the reply  i had wonderd about theloop in the boot, the previous owner told me he had pulled the loop so that he could use the roof manually, ive had a play with it and it doesnt seem to snap/pull back into position,i can still put the roof up/down manually, should this be possible? cheers

seems to me that it is in manual mode the brass button is pressed in to bypass and has to come out with a lot less force, (not sure If there is a spring) any corrosion around that area could cause it to seize, seems very suspicious that the previous owner used his roof manually too !

Where are you from Chap? I'm pretty roof experienced so if I can lend a hand I will.

Ah, bummer, here goes anyway.

The red pull should be in its little fitting, it shouldn't snap into it, you put it in and a plunger moved slowly into place. This should lock the roof in place hydraulically, so, un latch the roof, pull the hand out, move the roof a bit, put the handle back, wait 10 seconds and then try and move it.

If it locks in place with the handle in, then it's just the motor is dead, you can either replace this, or you can actually remove and refurb it easy enough (it's getting it out that's a bastard) a replacement costs approx £300 but paying someone to fit is £££
