Hi All

I'd like to run a little survey ............ :driving:

How many people think that there is a design fault with the Z4 roof motor....all i need is a yes/no, registration and the problem.......

I contacted BMW and they say there is no design fault yet lots of people have posted the fact that their roof motor when removed has been sitting in water.....

If i get a good response i'll contact BMW again and give them the results.

I might be wasting my time but hey ho..............here goes!

A) Yes/No.........
B) Motor ceased up sitting in water.......
C)2006 Sept......

Best wishes

I don't follow how you want us to answer.... But personally I think the design isn't very good and there have been a lot of soaked motors including mine.

This is bad enough...but it's even worse if they try to avoid covering this sort of thing on warranty.

I don't think you would be telling BMW anything they don't already know. :?

A) No
B) Motor ceased up sitting in water...
C) 2004 May

If drains are kept clear then it wouldn't sit in water in the first place...

Yes it could have been put in the boot area, but then the boot isn't big as it is, so I can see why they never took this approach...

could the position in which the car is generally parked be a factor in roof motor failure, eg ofside higher than nearside, which will affect the direction in which water would flow, the drains are so narrow , i feel capilirary action may be a factor which could cause the drains to fail .

Bought the car second hand and the roof motor packed up within 6 months. Planning to replace the motor myself in the next week or so. From the many posts I have read I would say the drainage system needs improving.

Got a 2004 that's just had to have motor done - the result of sitting in water as seems to be the case with most.

Mines booked in for tomorrow now how you feel had her 9 months grrrr

Back with the boot idea -i know the boots are not big to start with, but these cars are not known for their practicality,i would gladly have lost a foot in one corner of the boot to not have the worry of a major PITA.

I had power top motor failures on both of my previous Zed.
So far no problem on my ///M.

A) Yes
B) Motor failed do to water intrusion
C)2003 Jan

That's what i call real bad luck. Was it a fault with the roof motor or the drain plugs blocked which led to water damaging the motor?

I've owned my 2004 Z4 3.0i for about 3 months and the roof motor failed.
My opinion
1) Design Flaw - Yes
2) Failed due to water intrusion - not sitting in water - drains had nothing todo with it
3) Date of failure - Feb 2011

I replaced the motor myself with the help of this forum. A real major pain in the rear and I hope I never have to do it again. I sealed my new motor box up ten ways from Sunday. I think the box the motor is in is so poorly sealed that water follows the hydralic lines right into the box. I did not have any water in the cavity where the box sits ( where the drain is ) however the box that the motor is in had a lot of water and of course it rusted the motor to death. I really considered moving the motor box into the trunk area where it wouldn't get wet. I think BMW should have designed it that way - at least you could replace the motor without removing the whole top. I thought it was ridiculous that the dealer wanted $1500 to replace the motor but after doing the job - it's about right.

Both were covered under warranty so I am not certain of the exact problem but I am sure it was a water problem.

In 1950 my parents purchased a 1950 Plymouth convertible. The car was never garaged. It was driven until 1958 and was traded with 150,000 miles on it. The car went from Kansas to Wyoming to Japan to Hawaii to Louisiana back to Kansas and then to South Dakota. While in Japan it endured a typhoon and never once did the top fail to work or even leak for that matter. Yes, it was a power top. Now 50 plus year later why the hell can't BMW design a convertible top that does not leak water into the housing is alarming to say the least. It is the only serious failure that I've had on anyone of the 3 Z4's that I have had.

The motor sounds to be be working - They reckon its the pump - I'll not know until early May - two long Bank Holiday weekends so can't get it booked in!

Yesterday I helped a friend repairing his roof motor.

Here are some other drivers with the same problem:

Today, it's possible to repair the pump without removing the soft top ... the manuals are in German ... but, where are many photos to do this without some description.

Only two screws have to be opened to install the pump in the dry trunk - no more water-problems ...
