Roof motor investigations

So I had a look at my roof today to see if I could try and get it working. Oil was a bit low in the motor reservoir so I topped it up and it sort of worked but did whine a bit.

Then I heard a sort of pressure release sound over the drivers right ear. Then oil was low again. I wasn’t sure if the system had air in it so topped up and cycled a few times but each time oil disappears to somewhere and I heard a pressure release sound a couple of times. No oil is leaking out the bottom of the car but it’s going somewhere. 🤷‍♂️

Does this sound like a leaking pipe? Or any others suggestions?

I think it might be another trip to see Bowser if he’s still operating.

On the plus side my headlights polished up well with the auotglm headlight restoration kit and I just need to weld up the front engine strut brace before I can get an MOT. Just no cruising with the roof down just yet.

Cheers

If the level is dropping it must be going somewhere. Probably floating on top of the water in the well. :poke: :D
I'd say yes you have a split pipe. When the pressure builds up the split is opening and letting fluid out, then closing up again.
Same could occur if its a union leaking around a join.
Bowser is definitely still operating, in his own premises. Look up RBM, Hook.

I think I'm right in saying that the pipes are stainless but the unions are mild steel. So, the drain gets blocked, the well holds water, the unions corrode and... leak.

I thought at least parts of the pipes were flexible?
Stand to be corrected.

When you say you need to weld a front engine strut brace do you mean the diagonal braces from strut top tower to centre bulkhead ? Like these ?20220329_173622.jpg

When I say one has snapped in mean the bracket on the top of the suspension, not it the actual brace.
That implies a lot of stress on it?
I would recommend checking that the strut top mounts aren't cracking round the rubber and that the metal they bolt in to hasn't deformed.

Everything else looks ok, just the cracks in the bracket. I think they changed it slightly on the facelift if I remember correctly so I think it was a weak design

Some people mention that they drop the suspension down just in case the heat from the welder melts something.

Is this necessary if I’m careful and does it literally mean just removing the 3 nuts at the top of the suspension tower and Jacking up the car? Does it go back in easily?

I might just keep the area cool and do the welding very slowly.

I found it necessary when I did mine. Just remove the three nuts and slowly jack it up. Once finished welding just slowly jack the suspension back into place making sure the studs slide back into the holes.
