roof motor in the boot

Hi srhutch, just a piece of two ply i had. Measured the gap in the zed, cut it to size and covered it with felt. Wanted grey felt to go with the boot but couldn't source any. I sliced the carpet slightly as to hold it in place.

Cheers, tug.

Just an idea, but have you thought of getting a cheap(ish) gazebo? Would definitely be cheaper than renting a garage but would still allow you to work if it starts raining

Hi 85genius, i have one already mate, last time i used it i hadn't secured it properly and just at the time when we were lifting the roof out, a large gust of wind enabled it to take a bird's eye view of the surrounding area!

So instead of cracking on we had to run after it, much to the amusement of the neighbours!

Thanks for the thought though mate.

Cheers, tug.

Looks good Tug certainly a brighter idea than the bods from BMW. My girlfriends has just gone was supposed to have been done 16 months ago so will remove it soon and see if i can bring it back to life and move to the boot cheers for the info.

Having replaced the motor once myself I can appreciate the benefit of relocating it to the boot, but when I put the new motor back in, I sealed the soundproofing well with RTP so in theory it will not suffer the water damage again (plus I keep the drains clear and check them every now and then to make sure they're not getting blocked).
I'm curious as to the sound when putting the roof up/down - is it any different, louder, quieter? Has the soundproofing tape you used made much difference?
Great job, and I think anyone nearby tug should look him up, because his price seems any absolute bargain.

If only it were possible to release the hoop at the back and lift it upwards or push it inwards a bit. With the boot tray out you can see the top couple of inches of the motor clearly so accessing it through the passenger rear quarter of the roof would be a doddle.

Hey Tug,

Just a question about the hydraulics and wires routing into the boot. I understand that you remove the left hand folding top compartment mount to pass the pipes behind, then screw it back into place. Do you have to carve out a slot in the plastic moulding for the pipes to fit?

I know this is an old thread, but im sure more and more owners are getting drowned motors. After 5 years-yes 5 years of my roof not working have confirmed that it is definitely the motor. I have now taken early retirement and am looking to keep busy, So yesterday I attempted to remove the motor without taking the roof off. After 5 hours of tinkering(on and off - it would be impossible to remain working in the boot for this length of time)
I managed to get it out. Having done the job once I reckon I could now do it in less than an hour.I can now see that you could adopt a couple of different ways of making a quicker and much easier removal

So its not impossible and not as difficult as you may think. And a whole lot better than removing the roof. Huge satisfaction when I had the motor in my hand in the boot

It was certainly nice to see this old post of mine resurrected. Yes i was one of the first zed owners to do this mod back in the day and it was warmly received on the forum and elsewhere with a lot of interest from all over the internet.

I was just starting to get a lot of interest in this from far and wide and earning some beer tokens along the way when a personal catastrophe happened to me preventing me from moving on with this. :(

So lookin back i suppose i could have made quite a name for myself if i could have patented this idea

At least i helped a few owners who drove away happy

Cheers, tug

Blimey tug, that is the most refined and restrained answer I have ever seen from you... They changed your drugs?
