roof motor in the boot anyone?

Hi all, in a recent post i told a light hearted story about my neighboUr and my roof motor, well in that thread a few posters remarked that i should place the motor in the boot/trunk area. Well i got to thinking about this because i offer a service to fellow zed owners that have failed motors.

What i offer is to replace the motor (not the hydraulics) for £400. If they supply the motor, then i charge £150 for the full job. I have now done quite a few for friends in Leicester and beyond.

I have searched the net and found next to nothing about this. :idunno:

So if anybody has done this, could you offer any pointers as in, are the electrics long enough? I know the hydro lines are etc. If i could offer this in with the price then my customers might prefer this option to save any more problems.

If nobody can help, then i will take my roof out again and try and see what can be done. I will probably make a video to help others who might like to give it a go themselves.

He has done hundeds over the last decade or so.

He does it without removing the roof, and he makes a carpet panel that hides the motor from the boot.
I think he cuts the tie wrap and loosens the one bolt from within the interior or from the boot (first remove the roof tray)
Also a lot of motors are salvageble if you clean the motor/let the motor run in something like diesel oil

Maybe if you ask him he can give you some pointers, you're not in his geographical market place.

Hi again mate, thanks for the quick response, yes that is a good vid. Have watched it a few times but doesn't give the pointers i am after, although the motor does come out a decent way, perhaps it is possible without any mods.

Edit: yes, the diesel bath is one of the things i offer also. But take my word for it the motor still dies in the end.

I havent done this mod (my roof still works fine), but I've never heard that the electric wires should be lengtened.

I dont know how he fixes the pump in the bootspace, if its claped with some tiewraps or a braket etc..
Ask gasman (from your previous topic), he has been to pixelrichter and has this mod in his current car afaik.
Maybe he can make some pics or so.

Yes, my thought would be to slice the carpet either side of the housing and cable tie it. But would the carpet be strong enough to hold it in place? :idunno:

Hi I'm sure someone looked into this, I don't think the hydraulics are long enough to just do a quick relocate. If I can find it I'll post it on here

I don't know if its strong enough, I think so.

I also suspect there's a specific postition that the pump has to be mounted in.
If the pump lies on it's side, it must be prevented to suck in air from the reservoir. I think the inlet from the pump is a single hole in the aluminium pump block. That hole must be on the lowest point obviously.

Edit: ^the hydraulics are long enough, you can see on pixelrichters site that he has the pump bungeling in the boot. Electric leads seem long enough too

Aaaah! Excellent! just what i needed. Cheers AlpinaRoadsterS missed that on my searches. I know now that it can done without any mods.

Is yours neatly hidden away? in one of the pictures there is a panel, is that the finished job? How quiet is the operation?

this looks like a great idea if you can get it up and running and into production, I'm sure a lot of people would pay £100-£150 to stop there motors dying and then having to pay out double or even triple that! (and some people have even had to replace there motors more than once!)

YES. The bezel is covered with the same material as the rest of the boot.
I bet - a BMW technician would never come up with the idea to remove this bezel.

YES. The cover (bezel) is made of aluminum and is slightly larger than it should be.
He then clamped the cover with slight pressure (rubber mallet). Keeps perfect.

How quiet is the operation?

To my mind quieter than before.

Pixelrichter ist not the only person in german doing this.

I will use my zed for trial and error and when i think the job is good enough for other people then i will offer this also.
