Roof motor faulty after 4 months and relocated to boot

So it's faulty after 4 months and i live too far to take it back to the garage that fitted it, my guess is that my local stealer will cover the part but not the labour.....Oh the joys!!! Stealer wants £50 for pressing the button to confirm it's the roof WTF.

Motor has a strange whirring noise and sometimes doesn't pick the roof up straight away and sounds very laboured. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Sorry to hear, how many times in those 4 months have you checked the roof drains are clear?

Once when i got it, once when i removed the wheels for painting, once when i fitted the wheels after painting, once when i prepped it for MOT, Once when i painted the calipers and once when i did some brake pipe work...So every time i have had a jack under it i have checked the drain holes, probably too many times but better safe than sorry EH!

On the upside i bagged a pair of hoops with the deflectors in for £39.98 off fleabay  Hoops now back on said bay lol

That sounds frequent, do you pour water in from the top to check they're running free or just check for blockages at the bungs underneath though?
Rob

I have done but to be honest not every time, currently trying to get to motor to remove and see what levels/leaks if any, swishing of water and all seems dry.

Frequent very much so, but as i was in the area it seemed silly or rude not to have a fiddle.

OK so a quick update, Yes it was a new motor as i have spoken to the garage that changed it, I have managed to relocate it to the boot or at least will when it stops raining but the hard bit is done.....Motor looks new and compartment was dryish (maybe moist) So i hope to top up the hydraulic oil and fix it in place and hopefully forget about it.

Thanks for chipping in guys

You really want VG22 oil . It's a thinner hydraulic oil more suited to potential low over night temperatures where normal hydraulic oil becomes to thick to work effectively .

Google search

Hydraulic roof pump oil ........and you should find it .

OK thanks for the oil info, turns out i don't need any....booked in with bmw so they can check pump/motor and at least they can get to it now :D

From what you have described it sounds like you need to top up the Oil, I use the standard Hydraulics Oil (Costs about £4) from Eurocarparts and it has been working a treat :)

If you are really picky about it, this is the fluid used:

I did wonder about the topping up but decided it is a sealed unit that requires no servicing, However i guess it could have been low on install so will give it a go, thanks again.

Normal hydraulic oil will work but it's not recommended and the pump will have to work harder to push this thicker oil around the system . The viscosity of normal oil is far higher than the recommended grade which is VG22 .

The system is a sealed system where the oil merely gets pumped around back and forth as the roof is raised and lowered , there should be no use-age of oil , therefore it should not need to topping up unless there is a leak, in which case you need to find the leak !
