As there seem to be a number of roof failures lately, it would be interesting to see if this only occurs on cars that live outside at all times or whether this has also occurred on cars that are parked inside overnight.

Im going to guess garaged cars arnt seeing the wear on the motor, from what ive gathered the roof motor fails as it gets submerged in water when it rains for prolonged periods...... Mines been garaged pretty much all its life and the roof is holding up great, the fabric even looks new.....

Are you worried about roof issues??

Think we'll see roof motors going on cars that live outside.

Mine has a hardtop fitted if it's going to be outside for a period of time. However, washing and hood cleaning does make me nervous about water getting into the motor :(

Ive said on another thread - mine lived outside for 5 years, with no problems.

When I checked the drain holes they were completely clear...

Mine has lived outside as far as I know it's whole life but I am now considering a roof only cover so water runs off instead of going through the drain holes...

Interesting idea... However the majority of roof failures are going to prefacelifts... Which at a minimum of 5+ yrs old now most will be second+ hand owners... Will they know their full history? :?

True, but we are seeing some 07 failures which might be one owner cars.

I just wanted to see if there were any failures, ever, of a garaged car. I am pretty sure it will be the case that only outside cars will have had the failures, but rather than guess and ask on each thread I thought I would collect some data to back this thought up.

Who posted the "always garaged" failure though? Would like to hear the story behind that one (i.e. life long garaged etc).

And long may that be the case!!

I suppose that garaged cars will still be likely to get a good soaking through the day. A car in the Lakes which is garaged at night but left out through the day would probably see more rain than a South-coaster left outside all the time.

My car's roof motor failed before I bought it. Previous owner garaged the car at night, but parked it outside during the day

Where are the drain holes?

My roof failed just after I bought it, (during the last few days of the warranty!). As for washing it??????

If you do a search there's a good "how to" thread which shows you how to check drain holes

Even if blocked, perhaps a car parked inside will simply dry out rather than a car parked outside that will never dry?

Maybe, but some of those concrete sectionalised garages always seem damp and many years ago many people would say that cars garaged when wet wouldn't dry out so quickly as a car parked outside subjected to a stiff drying wind.

That is true, but at least there is no continual rain to add to the already moist situation.

My car would dry quicker outside than it would in the garage due to the fairly constant breeze we get up here. Its just a shame that it also rains a lot :headbang:

I don't think you get continual rain in the South East. East Anglia only gets 25 inches a year and they were talking about drought conditions and hose pipe bans just before Christmas. A reservoir just south of where I live, Pitsford near Northampton was empty in November. Maybe different in the South West, Wales and the Lakes but how many of us live there?
