Roof Microswitch list??

I've been looking online and BMW ETK and it's getting confusing!

Does anyone have the full part code list for the roof microswitches? Thinking about replacing all of them as well as the relays - roof has frozen on me once in the past couple of months so figured it may be a good time to tackle the job before it becomes a more serious problem!

Do any suppliers sell these as a complete kit - better yet are there any recommendations for indi's that could do the job?

Thanks

I wouldn't waste money on micro switches, my car is 11 years old this May, roof is used daily in the summer, never had a micro switch fail, just one loose connector and salmon relays.
When you see the price of the Hall switches (circa $250)...you will change your mind.

I believe a couple of those microswitches (or are they called 'hall sensors' ?) are in the scope of DIY replacement. The others I think are a much harder job. RobbiZ4 recommended a company that was close to Munich that looked exactly the sort of place that I would trust to do a good job - appreciate that is not practical for most people. They offer a roof overhaul checking and replacing many things. The price for a full roof overhaul was around 2500€ or so. https://www.staiger-neuffen.de/bmw-z4-e89-dach-notdienst/ They explain what they can do and why it may be necessary. Very useful starting point I thought.

Finding a non BMW agent who can be trusted to do the work with any confidence could be a challenge.

Thanks

I have a 2Mb pdf (100 pages) with diagrams and explanations regarding the roof - but not part numbers. It has all switch details and locations, wiring diagrams - also covers hydraulics.

PM me an email address if you want it.

To be honest, that is absolutely nonsense!
None of them failed in the about 50 roofs, I've already repaired.

Only wires and hoses will break in the roof.
In addition, the microswitches coupling lock can produce issues on some of the Z4, as their small springs get weak when spreaded over a complete decade.

Interesting to hear that, like I said earlier the roof has only frozen once half way up but then normal operation resumed a couple of mins later and it's been up and down numerous times since without fault, was looking at it from a preventative maintenance stance due to the age of the car as there isn't an easy manual way to close the roof in the event of a failure (I know there is with the right tools but it's not exactly a side of the road quick fix).

Which part is the coupling lock and what would the obvious faults be?
Is there a specific area that the loom gets trapped?
Thanks

Have a look at NewTIS:

The roof loom can break in about 2 different areas:

Broken wire areas can be replace by high flexible ones, but broken hydraulic hoses require to replace the complete loom (it's 1 single piece for both sides of the car!). The loom currently costs more than 1.000€, the complete replacement takes about 10-12 hours.

Great info, thank you

Hydraulic hoses 1000€ plus 10-12 hours of labour - owww.. Now that's a big bill....

The hoses are available in braided form for considerably less than that.

Just out of interest, and only in a 'thinking out loud' capacity: is there any way to repair a broken hydraulic hose?

Obviously if I was a proper shop where customer's expected a proper repair I would have to fix it to carry warranty for my work, but as a DIY, is there a way to repair a hose if it breaks? (Is the failure due to excessive movement of the hose or end connectors? Or is it usually at a very inaccessible spot meaning you would need to strip the whole thing out anyway?)

Again, just some thoughts. Hoping to save someone a few £££!

And how will you strip the old, broken ones out of the completely taped original loom? You have to remove everything out of the roof.

Have a look at the roof shell end of this expensive spare part:

Coupling lock area:

I’ve not personally replaced any but i know somebody who has & he didn’t buy a replacement loom, I assume he cut the loom open to remove the damaged hose or added the new hose alongside the original.
It’s definitely been accomplished though
