Roof microswitch in boot

Hi Guys,

I came to drop the roof this weekend and the amber light came on. When I checked in the boot I saw the tiny metal arm from the microswitch had dropped off and was sitting on the floor of the boot.

Is this something I can reattach (it doesn't look bent etc) or do I need to get a new one (and are they expensive?). Is this an easy job?

Just checking so I can be ready for the weekend when I'll have a chance to fix it.

Thanks,

John.

Same thing happened to mine. Yes it does reattach. You need to remove the plastic housing. It was a simple enough job, if a bit fiddly and not very elegant having your bum sticking out whilst removing it from such a small space.

Thanks for both of your comments - that sounds like the solution to my problem!!

Looks like I'll be crawling around in the boot this weekend!!

Thanks,

John.

Just need a torx allen key (can't recall what size..think is T20 or T15) to remove the two torx bolts and some gymnastics (bloody rear parcel shelf gets in the way for the upper bolt) to remove the whole assembly from the boot.

The reason why the metal lever has fallen off is due to wearing out of the plastic attaching bits on the microswitch body. I used double-sided tape to reinforce the lever together with nylon fishing wire for additional mechanical strength when re-installation. So far it is holding up fine in my car after the repair.

As said, very easy repair, mine has held up for over five years now. FWIW new ones five year ago were £18, so I guess £20 now.

10-15 min job at worst, put the shelf in the upper position and then just push it out of the way for the last bit, remove the plastic insert and dismantle the assembly. Once you remove the insert it'll be obvious.

Remember to lower the shelf after :)

Good luck!

Thanks everyone, your comments were all useful and after a bit of time spent pretending to be a contortionist this afternoon the switch is reassembled and working again!

John.

Glad you got the issue resolved. My recommendation for the next time you camp out in the trunk is to use an iso mat and possibly a sleeping bag...

Had to do this today!

Followed this YouTube for reference

I think step one (yes I’m an idiot  ) took me a while as I was under the shelf with a screw driver trying to pry the trim off. Much easier once I hooked my finger into the corner of the canvas and pulled it.

Wish I had some fishing wire as that sounds like a great idea to keep the metal lever in place. Used a bit of tape for now.

Being on my back with a foot against the garage door dangling out was interesting!
