Roof maintanance-

My question is connected with roof maintenence, but more specifically about the catch behind the roll hoops.

My car has developed a squeak behind the head rests, which has been there since May. The squeek is intermittent, and so it was difficult to diagnose. However, through a process of elimination, I have narrowed it down to the catch behind the roll hoops that keeps the soft top "clicked" in place.

What lube would you suggest for curing the squeek? WD40 or some other spray lube seem the obvious choices, but interested in what other forumites would recommend?
 
just out of interest and might be worth a poll but does the use of water repellents coincide with roof motor failure. since i did a light treatment on mine ive noticed more water sitting in the well around the base of the soft top
 
WD-40 will work, for a little while. The squeak will likely return, as WD-40 is more of a solvent than lubricant. The problem with traditional lubricants is they also attract dirt. You might try one the so called "dry" lubricants intended for bicycle chains, some are available as an easy to apply spray, others as a more precisely applied liquid. They usually use some variant of PTFE which will lubricate and repel water without attracting dirt.

Renovo roof restorer will work better. It restores the black colour. Just make sure you dont get the vinyl roof stuff :)

Adamski, is it only when the roof is down ? There is a thread on here somewhere about this - it may not be the catch behind the roll hoops, it is more likely the manual release handle at the top of the centre trim. When the roof is down the release catch inside rubs against the back of the plastic handle that is there, causing a squeak. You need to take that bit of centre trim off and line the back of the handle with some kind of thin felt to stop it. Mine squeaks, spent ages moving the roof and banging things when it was down, no dice... been meaning to fix it for ages just never got round to it as these sort of things take me forever to do... PVR is a contributor I think - could PM him ?

WD40 is actually a water dispersant (that's what the "WD" stands for). It's also good for protecting against corrosion, but it's not an especially good lubricant.

A PTFE (Teflon) lubricant - as you mention - would be a much better option.
