Roof Leaking - Rubber edge letting water in..

Yes you heard me right guys... :?

I was on the A19 in heavy rain and stuck in a tailback. Anyway i digress....

It seems the joint (rubber mould) on which the edge of the roof rests is holding water when it should not be letting it penetrate into the cabin. Its not like a trickle, but there were definite drops coming into the cabin.

Also, It seems the rubber trim is starting to look a bit worse for wear. Has anyone here witnessed this?

Anyone have any advice? Once i got the car moving again, there was no problem.

I have also applied sealent to the roof so it may be that the water is trickling to the edge and coming into the cabin?

I had the same problem on mine. It turned out that the rubber trim had deteriorated, and it cost me over £200 for a new trim from BMW.

This is a common problem with softtop cars, but I must admit I expected better from BMW.

Hi mate,

Do you know whether it is covered under the AUC warranty?

You could try some Einszett Gummi Pflege to try and get some life back into the rubber. Applied it to all the seals on mine and worked a treat - one of the sections around the top of the A-pillar was slightly misshapen and leaking a very small amount of water, Gummi Pflege bought the seal back to looking like new and allowed me to put it back to something like the original profile. No more leak! Am now using it as preventative maintenance.

You can buy Gummi Pflege on eBay for under £10. Worth a try?

Sound advice as always Pawn!!!

Sounds like you had the same problem as me, as mine is misshapen too...

I have been looking for a rubber restorer all morning too! Its ordered already.....

No problem mate, Z4 Beemer to thank for this one! Although I only think he uses it because the name sounds funny... well, that and the smell.

Is there a smell to it...? :P

Another good product that does pretty much the same job is 303 Aerospace Protectant, though I remember someone telling me that Gummi Pflege is better for softer rubber seals.

Hi Pawnsacrifice,

Just resurecting an old thread here as it appears I have a similar problem to the one you decribed above!

Did you have water leaking from the top of the A-pillar seal and either dripping or running down the inside of the window?

I think I need to get some of this Gummi Pflege stuff and try and re-shape the rubber, passenger side is fine, but the leaking on the drivers side is annoying me now!!!

Cheers,
Stuart

Thanks! Although I see from the last page that the GB has ended. I'll grab some off ebay and hopefully it will cure my problem!
