Roof Latch

Hi Guys

Not another roof problem I hear you yell.... Yep sure is. ;)

Most of the operation is working fine, windows come down roof opens OK, it's just the very last bit where it's meant to latch down. It stops the operation about 2mm from completion and doesn't latch. This means that the roof wobbles more than it should when driving, so I give it a little push and it latches in fine. On closing the roof all is good.

I've done some reading through the forum and can't find this specific issue although there seems to be a lot more woes to the roof than I have.
I think it may be the senors in the boot/trunk, anyone had this or have any advice?

Cheers

Jay

PS. Here's few shots from my drive around Derbyshire a few weeks back...

This is a known BMW fault and the dealer should have an update bulletin with a fairly simple fix.

Cheers AlanJ I'll check it out next time in it's in the shop.

Hunter I used to live in Sheffield and love the roads out towards Hathersage and over the Snake Pass but I now live in London which is full of Traffic :( so I get up to see friends and family as often as I can and have a blast on the roads too.

actually when my top got replaced, the top did not have a latch anymore. the top would simply rest on top of the other latch permanently located at the interior trim in between the roll bars.

I would query this. The latch at least prevents the wind catching underneath the roof and lifting it as a safety feature.

OK - as long as you are hppy but it looks as though the fitting points are already there on the new one. Might be worth looking at dalers TIS to see if it shows it or not, just to be safe.

Jay9K: There are no sensors for the top in the boot except for the 'Compartment floor switch'. If that switch does not work, then the top will not go down.... but will go up...

melbs: Take your car back to who ever did the replacement. There IS supposed to be a latch there. They just forgot to install it...

I remember back in Z4um, one member had problems with the latch as well and claimed under warranty, BMW likewise just removed the latch. Cannot recall who exactly and what circumstance he was in.

That sounds like an easy way to get you out of the shop.

Remember, BMW would not have designed it on the car in the first place unless it was needed. The time/cost of designing the part and the cost of manufacturing the part... it just eats into profits...

I thought the facelifted cars had the latch removed, was the roof or pump changed in any way to reflect this?

I had the same problem, also under warranty. After about a week in the shop they took out the latch and told me it was fixed.

I wasnt convinced and called head office. They confirmed that its standard practice now - even for pre-facelifts- and isn't a safety issue.

Still not convinced, I had a blast out on the autobahns with the top down last month. Since I still have a roof - it didnt budge at all, it must be safe enough...at least to 135 anyways

Then BMW has decided that it costs more to adjust the top than to remove the latch.... :headbang:

Yeah, you are probably right! They had tried and failed to adjust it out twice. I was hoping they would just slap in a whole new roof cassette, since my top has a couple of wear marks! It would probably have been cheaper than the time they spent dicking about with it.

So lets get this right - if something doesn't work and can't easily be fixed BMW just remove it! Inspires confidence doesn't it
