Roof latch wont unlock. No lights flashing. Stuck down. ××× SOLVED ×××

Hello all,

So Ive got an E85 (2003 3.0i). Having some problems with the roof. The motor broke a long time ago so I just push it up and down manually.
However today I put it down (locked in place ok using the dash button). However the dash buttons have stopped working, they wont even flash when pushing them, so the rood is stuck down! I can unlock it with the interior manual release flap, but I cant get it to lock the latches in place when its up.

Ive tried pulling the red release cable in the boot.
The roof storage compartment is down as normal and the pushing the switch in nicely. What else am I missing?? Are there more micro switches that need to be pushed?

To lock it in place on the windscreen, you need to remove the black cover on the front of the roof and then wind the latches shut using an Allen key. About a 4-5mm key I think.

However, youre going to need to sort the roof to sell it (or lose £7/800 min) so you'd may as well sort it and enjoy it now.
Members on this forum will help you for a fraction of that cost, but who depends on where in the UK you are located.?

Thank you very very much mate! Just had a 3 hour drive home and it would have been a much colder drive without your help! So much appreciate.
Well im based down near Portsmouth/Southampton area, if you know of any members who could help let me know!

The roof module will have gone offline due to loss of sync with the latching motor. Common problem when the roof is operated manually.

I've done a lot like this, and it's easily sorted whilst repairing and relocating the roof motor.

Ah I see! So I have to replace the latch motor? Or can I resync it? Cheers Mike.

Hi guys, just a quick update. Found this on another bimmer forum, turns out it was because I had disconnected my battery a couple of weeks ago and the windows needed to be reset! Very stange.

Here's the write up that I followed. Roof latches and unlatches as normal now. Thanks for everyones advise!

Write up:
It's not uncommon for resets to be required after battery replacement.

My Z4 is a coupe, and it still has the original battery, so a retracting top issue isn't a problem I'm likely to face.

Here's a quick suggestion to try. If you haven't yet reinitialized the side windows. From the owners manual:

After a power supply interruption, for instance after disconnecting the battery, the pinch pro- tection system must be reinitialized.

Roadster: when the convertible top has
been stored in the convertible top com- partment for an extended period of time, e.g. in the winter months because the hardtop was being used, it may also be necessary to reinitial- ize the pinch protection system.<

Ensure that the doors and the Roadster's convertible top are closed before initializing.

1. Open the window completely.
2. Press the switch 4 times within approx.
10 seconds.

Afterward, perform the following procedure twice for each window:

1. Close the window completely by pulling the switch.
2. After the window is closed, keep pulling the switch for approx. 2 seconds.
3. Open the window completely by pressing the switch.

It's a long shot, but maybe the side windows need to be reset before the car will operate the top.
