Roof issues

There is a thread about delaminating of rear screens on bimmerpost ‘BMW G29 soft top problem, help’. General consensus seems to be it is a cosmetic issue with no leaks reported.

Hi, first post on here since purchasing my used Z4 in November. 6 months after purchasing the car I too have the same rear window issue (some black coming away from glass on bottom right had corner) . Took it into dealers (have approved used warranty). They hadn't seen this before and their diagnosis (which I hope is wrong) is window coming away from roof and therefore requiring new outer roof. They have asked BMW for a goodwill gesture and will notify me in due course. From looking at your pictures mine is exactly the same and it is watertight. I suspect it is not coming away (no sign that i can see of that) and that it is delamination and just cosmetic - but very very annoying. Does anyone have any updates on their rear window issues ?

If purchase with bmw warranty, I would get them to deal with it. That’s certainly not right.

Just an update on this issue. Dealer had a look and raised it with BMW who rejected it. I then raised a complaint and that's come back negative as well.

So, the message from BMW appears to be if your roof starts doing this you're on you own even if you bought the extended warranty.
My cars almost 6 years old so not expecting perfection, or for them to cover everything but I would not expect a 6 year old roof to start coming apart.

Not decided what to do next but just one to keep in mind when you decide whether it's worth handing over your hard earned cash for extended warranties.

Thanks and merry Xmas all.

That’s horrific.
Personally, I would get a quote for repair and then file a small claims court against BMW to try and get them to fix it. No way should a window becoming out of the roof.

Exactly the same problem here, seems to affect a quite a few cars, mine was four years old when it started. Dealer said I didn't have the darkened rear window, I bought the car second hand so assumed a tint had been put on, of course it hasn't, just anything to get rid of me. Car looks a mess, not good for resale. As I understand it the whole roof would need replacing so no wonder BMW doesn't want to admit it's a fault!

Yes been quoted 3k odd to replace, will prob swallow it as plan to keep a while and would probably ruin resale anyway. Pretty poor tho...

That's appalling.

It looks like a BMW warranty is pretty worthless these days, what with this and sars pedestrian protection system activation.

Strange that the damage seems to affect the driver's side and occur where you can feel fittings on the inside of the roof. My guess is some sort of stress when the roof operates. Is that £3k a subsidised price for having the warranty or just a take it or leave it price?
