roof issues - red flashing light

hello folks

only had the z a couple of days but already the red light is flashing for when the roof is down. will try and get it sorted under the warrenty of the garage but he said at time only mechanical is covered!

any was, have read the manual but have also searched this site. but what does teh red light flashing mean in real terms etc?

I had this happen a couple of weeks ago, went to put the roof up and the light flashed constantly - the roof would not then go up or down. Mine was a constant flash even after we manually closed the roof - had the whole wiring loom replaced and that was under warranty, but i have a full bmw one.

I have however noticed, it still sometimes flashes if you have not kept your finger on the button long enough and it has not quite completed the opening process. Hopfully that is all yours is, sure someone on here with more knowledge will give you a more precise answer.

Still abit worried about mine as the windows have not been going up or down correctly after opening and closing the roof, still think i have dodgy wiring.

every time the roof goes down, cant remember if it was on when i viewed the car though! very much doubt the garage will cover the roof issue!

the roof when going down isnt interrupted but goes down fully and back up fully, now i'm not too sure if the speed and the noice is correct as its the only one i viewed.

Red light should only flash when the roof down operation is incomplete, as said, if you take your finger off the button too early. A flashing orange light indicates the tray in the rear is not fully down and the hood won't open. If the hood is opening fully then sounds as if there's a fault somewhere on the sensor/wiring

How can you buy a car and only the mechanics be covered unless it's a private sale?

Surely you have a guarantee for say 30 days with the garage that everything works on collection? I'd be on the phone today telling them that on collection it did not work and needs fixing.

think i wasnt holding the button down for long enough! lights off today but short lived as started to rain heavily after about 15 mins :(

cj - pass if worse comes to worse always get trading standards involved.

will keep eye on the roof over the next few days just incase there is something wrong.

Sure - it may only be an error in the way you held the button down, whch I hope so, however I'd call just to register with them that it's not working. Easy enough to call in a week and say all is fine.

If you look at roof problems posted on the board and assume that it's not the switch but worst case is the motor (not pulling the roof down hard enough to lock), then it's a huge job to dismantle replace and refit.

hi mate sounds like you are not keeping your finger on the button long enough. If you take it off to early the red light will flash every time ,are you keeping your finger on the button till the door windows close, if not do that when roof opens or closes and the red light will go out there is s slight pause when you think the its finished but you need to keep your finger on till the windows close do this and you wont have any more problems . :driving:

too busy driving around with the roof down in this sun and no flashing lights to come back here  :driving:

Me too, although I have to confesss that I had the roof up for 3 whole days and was upset at not being able to have it down.

Still I was away on business in Edinburgh for 3 days :)
Back home now and even the M42 at 29c roof down fast lane was great

just leaving now.. Southampton to Warwick.. 27 degrees and will be on cruise admiring the view 8)

sorry chaps back from hectic few days!

lights no longer flashing seems that i wasnt pressing button for long enough.

Hi I'm getting this issue too. I've had the car for around 2 weeks now and it is happening when the roof is down.

How I've been told that it's fully down (by previous owner) is that when the windows go back up from it's half way position it means that the roof is fully down. is this correct?

The light remains off for a while and then after a couple of minutes i notice the light is on. I have to then stop. press the button again for the light to switch off again for it to then come back on. only a few times has it remained off.

So they are warning lights? I've always just held the button for up or down until I cant hear the motor running anymore like what the guy I bought it from told me.

I only had one issue where it wouldnt go back up but then it had been down for like 5 months while the hardtop was on, kept pressing up n down and it came back to life how relieved was I :P its the only car I've owned that fixes itself, however I still havent tried sport mode since  paranoid much

Warning lights are never good, so it's always good to listen. :P

You need to manually assit it after a long period of it being down. Read the handbook.

Does the sports mode drink more petrol on manuals?

Frontin' you know I cant read lool

I stopped using sport mode after the steering stopped working when I was in it, and then fixed itself
