Roof issue

Well, I've been driving the car for 1 month and 24 days without issue so I suppose I should be grateful :headbang:

Roof struggled to close yesterday, gave me a 'roof movement impaired' error on the dash and then slowly lurched itself shut eventually - no issue opening at all.

Same today, fine opening, took a video of it struggling to close.

I'm in the boot tomorrow fitting my new battery so will look for anything obvious and grab any error codes, but any thoughts on this one? I've read very good reviews about 'caymanautos' in Surrey which isn't too far, so might just pop it down there.

Battery - new one going in tomorrow.

Relays - replaced a few weeks ago.

Oil level - will check tomorrow, ta.

Whole battery/pump area is bone dry.

Just been reading about hall sensors and the price jump from £15 to £250 plus. That's just criminal.

Thanks for your help, I hope so! Not getting any low voltage warnings but it is a bit sluggish to crank in the cold and is the original 10 year old battery.

Update to follow 👍

Replace the battery, if its the original one of 2009/10

Thanks again Robbi, new battery installed today and the roof is back to normal - phew!

(and the pump fluid is on 'max')

did you try opening/closing the roof w/ engine running as well when you had the problem?

just cross-checking with some earlier posts

I knew my battery was on the way out - which is why I had bought a new one anyway this week, it was just very convenient timing it fixed the roof issue too :D so I've made a point of NOT operating the roof without the engine running - since I first bought the car a few months ago anyway - as I've read several posts where members have run their battery down fiddling around with the roof without the engine running.

Both times I had the juddering roof issue in the past 2 days was WITH the engine running - but that did come out of the blue, I use the roof basically every journey it's not raining and I'd never had an issue until Thursday just gone.

I am going to ask a silly question but how do you check the pump fluid level?

Not silly at all - find the pump in front of the battery, remove the grey foam above so you can see it. Left hand side of the pump is a plastic reservoir - on the side of it nearest the back of the car are 'min' and 'max' marks - the fluid is easy to see through the plastic if you wobble the pump.

There is a min/max label on the white reservoir of the pump. If its missing, the oil level should be exact on the middle of the reservoir. In general, no oil is required over the lifetime of the car, except there is a leak.

Thanks for the info RobbiZ4, one more question what would cause the fluid to leak and is there anything that you should do to ensure it does not leak in the future?

Many thanks I just checked it

Hydraulic hoses will break in the future as well as the seals of the hydraulic rams might get weak. Nothing else.

AFAIK nothing can be done in advance, except replacing all parts in time. And that "time" is between the age of 8 and 15.

Summary:
Dont worry, enjoy the car and call me if its required.
