Roof is stuck down! What should I do???

Was the motor making any noise at all? Did you have any lights on the actuation swich? this may help diagnosis,

Best eliminate the cheap options first,
- Check fuses in the glovebox, if a big item like the motor has been flooded it may well blow a fuse.
- Also make sure the rear roof drains are clear to drain the motor cavity and let things dry out properly, then try again (having returned the bypass cable/lever to it's functioning position, checked all micro switches are not damaged and the boot cover is properly in place)

If it's still not working after these checks you can panic, as it may be the main roof motor

It does make a noise I think, but i will change the fuse and see if it works, the drains are clear (last checked couple months ago)

Thanks,

J

As ewazix says, check everything else first...

If it's any consolation, your cleaning may just have been the straw that broke the camel's back - the motors last a long time underwater, so it was probably on it's way out anyway if it has failed.

You're looking at about £350 for the bits and £300 labour. If you are handy with tools then you can save yourself £300 by doing it yourself. There is a great guide on here by Shipkiller, just search in e85/86 problems for roof motor.

It's no problem moving it by hand, just make sure you have a person to lift / lower the other side or always reach over and grip in the middle to avoid twisting the mechanism. When it's down it should still lock in place with the button if the electrics are working

Thanks, but I don't think I cant change it. During Dec, it seem to slow down a bit and once or twice closed very slowly. It could be just gone. It is a 85k mile car. I just need to find sonewhere that doesnt rip me off in kent to do this job!

hi n01beyondfan,

i too have just experianced this problem, worst part about it is i've only had the car a few month and it looks to set me back a fortune at the minute with other issues including the roof problem.
I rang a couple of specialists and both prices were under £650 all in which i would say is a fair rate for the time involved.
I've decided im going to give it a go myself as with all the other issues ive got at the minute 300 labour can go towards other repairs.
Hope you get it sorted though and at least worst case you can operate it manually.

Bing is in Kent and had his done. Hopefully he can point you in the right direction to someone local..

Indeed - I used H&C Motors, an Indy in Maidstone who do my servicing too. Good guys

It was the roof motor . It was corroded . The mechanic apparently drilled two holes now under the motor to allow the water to leave ....

Hi,

Did the roof have to come off for these holes to be drilled.
How much were you charged.

Thanks

When mine was done, yes.

£350 for the motor and new housing, about the same in labour to change it - all at a reputable indy. It is a good few hours work.

Pics and an intro in the newbies section would be great when you get a moment

Sorry for slow reply. Yea the roof had to come off.

Erm I had a couple of things done some electronic wire fault for bulb and bumper. But I would say 1k without vat covered all of them.

I fix my motor myself and relocated it to the boot. Didn’t need to take the roof off. It is accessible from the boot with a bit of effort.

you will find a slot at the end of the black part, pull the red hook 90% and it will lock, that should allow you to move the roof

He had the problem about 6 years ago RW so he's probably not got the zed anymore you blind old duffer.
