Hi completely newbie here and just purchased a 2008 E85 with a faulty roof .. the previous owner stated he fitted a new motor. However when button is pressed the roof opens about 4 inches then repeatedlyā€˜ slams shut’ really hard on header rail? What fault does this point to ? I would be very grateful for any assistance or advice please šŸ™
Thank you all in advance….
Kind regards
Gary near Brighton

I think the roof moves on a hydraulic system, could be low fluid perhaps? Pressurises to a certain point then hits air and drops.

Sounds as though the motor may be running the wrong way? Is the motor accessible in the boot or back in the original position?
I would try swapping the wires over on the motor.

Regardless of the issue I think you need to move the motor into the boot first to be able to diagnose properly.
As mentioned above it could also be low fluid level if it wasn’t bled and refilled before putting it back.

If the pump/motor is still in the original position and has not been relocated to the boot it really needs relocating then you can get at it to find what's wrong. Its a real faff getting it out from the original location but doable, videos on Youtube and posts on here detail how to go about it. One of our resident Roof motor relocators on here 'Number5' (Alan) is who I send my Zedshed Cymru members to for relocation jobs, he carries spares so well equipped to sort all problems and very reasonable. Alan is based just off the M4 at Bristol so a fair way from you but doable in a day. PM him on here for more details.

[ref]Gaz5855[/ref], whereabouts near Brighton?
My old man is in Rustington and I could be persuaded to combine a visit to him with a bit of roof fettling.
Depends on timing though, as I'm away on my hols end of next week.

Hi, Enuff Zed / I live in Worthing, BN11 2FL if you could please have a look and earn a few bucks I’d be absolutely delighted and forever grateful!!! Thank you!!! if possible as so near Rustington.
Kind regards Gary (can’t seem to PM anyone guess cause I’m new)?

As a new member I can’t contact Alan / ā€˜Number 5’ to get address, or contact Enuff Zed to give him my address? It’s rather frustrating as you guys are extremely helpful!
The motor is accessible, I’ve checked fluid level and tried reversing wires all to no avail…

You need three posts to PM. I'll send you one now and you can reply to that after one more post.
As stated, I am away from 7-17 March and not entirely certain if I can get down there before that. So it kind of depends how much of a rush you are in.
Is the motor relocated to the boot or was it put back in it's original dark hole of doom?

Ah, ok. Our posts crossed.
I'll email you and we can take it from there.

[ref]Gaz5855[/ref], has it ever worked in your ownership, or always done this?

Another thing to try is to undo the three small allen head screws holding the black plastic lever and the manual cable on the pump head.
Under there you’ll find a brass plunger which should push in about 3-4mm and pop back out. If it is stuck in, or partly in, then its not allowing full hydraulic pressure to build up.
Get a 5mm socket on it and twist it until it is definitely fully out.

Also, look at the pipes near the pump. They should have numbers on them. 11 and 13 should be together. 12 and 14 should be together. Otherwise one ram is trying to go up and the other down at the same time.

Let me know what you find.
