Hi there,
I bought my 2003 Z a couple of months ago knowing that the rear roof motor/pump unit needed replaced. However, once I realised that opening and closing manually was no trouble at all, I decided to put the replacement on the "nice to have" list.
After a sunny drive on Wednesday, the roof decided it didn't want to come back up by hand - as if lifting against the hydraulic system. I double checked the lever in the back, and that was fine, so after a little head scratching, I decided to try raising it off the switch. It worked! Well, kind of... And this is my problem. The roof is behaving like my ex wife.
It seems I can't raise or lower it manually anymore, but if I get the combination just right it will go up and down automatically.
The sequence is this:
Press the lower button to drop the windows and release the front locks, then I press the raise button and the roof retracts. Most of the time at least, sometimes there's a bit of going up and down before it finally decides to fully retract.
Raising the roof is completely unpredictable. The Lower button raises it as far as the windscreen, then I sit with my fingers crossed hoping one of the buttons will eventually lock it...
Any ideas? I was really happy with the semi-manual roof.
