roof gone

My roof went last night (3.0SE, 2004) :x . Had it less than a month. Having a nice bath, just about to hop into bed for an early night. Wife comes in, home from visiting her friends house, freezing cold because she's had the roof down all the way. Managed to get the roof back up by sort of rocking it backwards and forwards, which made an amusing squeaking noise from the suspension as if I was up to something else (which would be quite tricky in a two seater!!). Not good at half past midnight in a quiet street with everyone with their windows open 
All the same symptoms as a load of other people. Main motor not making any noise, checked parcel shelf switch (fine), locking mechanism working fine. I have to say I found the red lever in the boot really tough to budge (I don't think it actually did). Had all my bodyweight on it and it wouldn't move. Roof had always worked fine up until now.
As an aside, has anyone posted on cleaning drains to prevent this from happening? Or its there anything you can do to ensure the motor is kept dry (bodge-wise)?

That does seem like a daft idea being down in that water trap, doesnt it?
Is the facelift one a different design?

Mm nope, I'm having work done in my house/garage and waiting until I'm able to use my garage to put my car in. Before I start.. Still would be good to do a roof meet though
hi there iv been lookin in this forum for sum tym as there are many fults wiv z4s . thak for al the advice given .iv had my for a year now iv had problems wiv my abs(i had the three lighs on ) and this week my roof went, great both tyms iv took my car to a.p.a.c in the walsall, west mids. although they ent bmw indipendents they seem to knw wot there doing and never had a problem with them, i got my motor my self and they changed it and unbloked the drain holes both sides for £140 beats doin it your self for that, if your trying to find a place that will take it on apart from dearler, id give apac a ring, 01922 455 795, let them knw i told you tho i myt get discount next tym lol cheer.

Right gave the guy a call and it looks promising, he has done 2-3 before, knows the problem and knows how to fix it, said he will charge £140 for clearing drains, changing motor and casing (I provide) and will properly seal back together all in 1 day!! And it's local to me too!!
He is getting some prices on the motor from BMW first and will get it booked in and let you guys know how it went but all in for £450 to fix this problem instead of £1500 sounds great!

You don't want to have to do this every few years really do you. Can you fit it with a shroud or is there a way you can easily clean the drain (from the pics it only looks accessible when the hood is removed)?

Unfortunately it looks like shipkillers website is down so the PDF isn't working. But looks like cleaning them would be a bit of closing the stable door affair now,
Tried my hood today and it worked!

to clean your drains dont bother taking off the wheel, or removing the whole trim..
its 4 screws on the mini trim bit. 3 on the inner and one below.

I said I think you may have clicked on the wrong bit there matey, but left him to it
