Roof Failed – Correct Investigation Process??

Hi I know this topic been covered regarding roof failure but my problem has slightly different circumstances!! And my investigation is currently at an early stage.

I came to use the roof and initially it made more noise than normal coming up – enough noise to concern me. The next time I used it, it took longer than normal to go down. Then, when I tried to close it, it failed altogether and it would not go up. The red light flashes on the control button.

This is where thing are different than previous post I have read: I had noticed previously that the cord in the boot was out, been like this since had car (1 year) and when I went to the boot to manually put the roof up after it failed I also found the other red cord was out. So the mechanism was disengaged for motor.

I can hear the motor when I operate the down action, but not on the close action button.

My investigation route is a follows (In expense order)

1. Has the mechanism become disconnected i.e the cord in the boot was out, and when I went to the boot to manually put the roof up I also found the other red cord was out. How do you reset these???

2. Hear about faulty micro switches anybody got details of what I should look for?

3. Check hydraulic levels

4. Replace pump as I can still hear the motor so cannot be an electric issue.

5. If the Motor is the issue will follow http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=10190&hilit=roof+motor
Guide

Are the pump and motor a single unit or can you buy them separately? I hope so. :(

Main question at present is how do you reset the cords so the roof works back on the motor mechanism???

This car is expensive to maintain!! Makes me sad and mad that a car is so nice to drive but so bad to own !!!

1) The red cord only moves about 2cm, and I only have one, on the left hand side as you look at the boot. Pulled out and twisted is disengaged. Try pulling it out and rotating so that the "pin" fit back into the socket. It also controls both "Up" and "Down", so if it drops by motor, it should also raise...

2) Microswitches are under the parcel shelf. If the button operates the catches on the roof, its not that :-) If the switch is faulty then nothing works, including windows dropping.

3) Ive not heard of these needing topping up, its a sealed system i believe.

4) I think its one unit

5) yup...

However, it sounds like you might get away with simply "lubing" the hinges etc on your roof. If the pump has gone, it will drop the windows, and the unhitch the front, then nothing, no noises, no movement.

I feel your pain, I brought a facelift to avoid this issue, and still got hit by it :headbang:

Good luck !
