roof drains

how do people clean the drain out under the roof motor? i can get up to it from the underside i know and i dont thing there is any crud in the pipe but i have to park under trees and the car is take in a battering with leaves. there is nothing i can do about it so just have to keep cleaning them out which is easier said than done on that side?

where are these drains under the windscreen cover that block too (i know i asked else where but cant remember the thread )

as for the windscreen drain, look at my "howto" on fixing broken / sticky window wipers - you need to take the scuttle panel off and the drain is directly below the wiper motor.

You can remove it from inside the engine bay, but you won't be able to clear out the inevitable crud that's built up inside without removing the scuttle.


You can also find out what threads you've started by clicking on "User CP" up in the top right then clicking on "manage subscriptions".

in this one, it's effectively in the middle of the bulge on the left side of the window wiper compartment - half way between the two drawn red circles.




in this one, it's looking directly down at the motor and the drain is underneath all that leaf crud you can see.

Think I might do this (drains and wiper blade mechanism cleaning) later today or tomorrow actually - I bot of preventative maintenance never hurts, and it's a good excuse to learn more about the car

nice one, my wipers have an annoying squeek anyway so i thought i would be taking this off at some point to give then a quick oil... might as well kill 2 birds with one socket set then.

i guess all i can do for the leaves is try and poke a stick down the side of the motor to break any that are down there up. they do drain ok but im sure there will be some in them. i followed shipkillers thread to clean them out but as well know the passenger one is underneath the motor so hard to get to.

I think you'll find the motor side is impossible to get to from the top - be careful you don't end up with bits of broken stick down there. Some people have used compressed air to clear them, but I don't have a compressor.

With regard to squeaky wipers, it's not just the attaching point you need to lubricate. Mine squeaked but just doing those bits didn't solve it, I had to carefully lubricate the moving joints on the wiper blade itself to get rid of it (where it flexes to follow the shape of the window).
