Roof down when wet / damp

Hello all, couldn’t find any info on this, however I remember when I had my E85 it was advise-able not to put the roof down when it was wet / damp as it may mess up the roof motor.

Don’t think it was an issue with the E89 as it has a hard top, but would you guys recommend following the same advise on the G29 as the E85 ?

Can't see why it would bother the motor. If you leave the roof down for a long time whilst it wet then that might damage the mohair but there are no other issues as far as i can see. Same with the hard roof, just use it however you want.

My roof spends 90%+ of the time down. Needs to be out in heavy rain before it goes up. Car and roof motor are 15 years old now and still working perfectly, in the original position. I was driving top down in the rain across Dartmoor only yesterday. :driving:

She does spend much of her life, these days, in a lovely warm garage though. With the roof down. :D

The advice is the same. Do not put the roof down when it’s wet or frozen. Below is the screenshot of relevant section in the manual:

Leaving a damp/wet hood in the down position will almost certainly allow mildew to form and stain the material. Best practice is to put the hood up when you park up in the garage so it gets a chance to dry naturally.

It would be great if I actually have a garage but I don't as I had my kitchen extended into it.

Roof up until Spring then I suppose

Love the contradiction/lack of clarity (translation) in the manual, bit of common sense is required, if its wet/damp okay to have it down for a short period, but I wouldn't want to keep it down for more than a few hours as you do not want it to dry out folded up in the boot as it will mark.

That screen shot is for the metal convertible top - the OP has the fabric version - there is no such warning in the manual for the E85. This is all it has to say on the subject:
"Never store the convertible top while
it is wet to avoid permanent damage
from moisture. "

No, he’s right - I missed that in the g29 owners manual, which also includes a graphic for a manual transmission, presumably for non uk markets.

[ref]Rockhopper[/ref], the screenshot is taken from the latest digital manual of G29. Whether this appeared in E85 manual, I don't know. But G29 certainly has this section.

[ref]gusTaco[/ref], G29 20i sport has manual version but not in UK. Australia has it and only two sold in two years (https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/07/19/bmw-australia-cancels-the-z4-manual-after-selling-2-units-in-2-years/), and now they decided to stop selling it.

I'll take that. :D

Just to clarify a few finer points. When I get home from a top down drive in the damp. First thing I do is put the roof up, on the drive. Then rinse the brake dust/muck off the wheels. Then wash the car, as long as the rain's not too heavy. Then pop her in the garage and pat the roof dry, with a towel. If the cars going to be in there any more than a few days, then I will put the roof down the next day, after it is dry.

If I get home with the roof up, because it's chucking it down. Then I usually drive her straight into the garage and leave things until it's dry then bring her out clean her and put the roof down once she is dry and back in the garage. A little TLC goes a long way.

If I had a garage (which I don't) I would never leave mine in it with the roof down for the simple reason that's how the spiders get in it

but the op has an E85. I'm not disputing where you got your screen shot from.

I had an E85, now a G29 , hence why I was wondering about the soft top. Wasn't much of a worry with the E89 though I sometimes miss the hardtop !

Spiders are carnivorous hunters. If you keep the car/garage clean, they can't eat. Never had any trouble with them. :D
