As title really...was on way back from a meeting today and had my boss with me. He's such a tart he convinced me to put the roof down. To be fair, it was sunny where we set off.

Got onto the M5 and after a few miles it started to spit rain. Wasn't getting wet cos it was flying over the cabin, but dark clouds ahead and next exit 9 miles.

So I stopped on the hard shoulder and put the roof up.

Is it ok to stop on the hard shoulder for this reason. I know the hard shoulder is a dangerous place to be, so don't hang around, but could the police actually do me for it?

I've always understood it to be for emergencies only, and getting wet probably doesn't class as an emergency!

:o yes if they catch you

I've done it before but only because I got stuck in a 10mph traffic jam. Otherwise, drive faster and the rain will miss you then come off at the next junction!

Thanks. I thought it probably was naughty, but then thought that cops stop you on the hard shoulder for speeding...thats not an emergency. However, I see that is accounted for in the link above!

If you're doing more than 70kph ;) you're unlikely to get wet.

Even at 60 only real heavy rain will get in

I have been driving on the motorway and been caught in a torrential downpour... You wont get wet.. But will look like a prat!

I stopped on the hard shoulder under a bridge and put the roof up.

In all seriousness, I would call having the top down and getting caught in heavy rain on a motorway a bit of an emergency, as in theory it could affect your ability to drive safely (e.g. you are not wearing a helmet like a Caterham driver would be, so your vision could be hampered). If they stopped by me I would just explain myself and take the telling off you'd probably get for to taking weather conditions into account before starting your journey. I am pretty sure you'd get a warning at most ?

It could be argued that its more dangerous to be driving in heavy rain with the roof down, so I reckon you did the right thing...

I have seen a couple of verts stopped on the Hard shoulder putting the roof up, Last was a Z3, I would have done the same to be honest

Its happened to me too, & I pulled onto the hard-shoulder, though I'd say it was an emergency as the rain was coming down so hard that my glasses fogged-up & I couldnt see.

Been in that situation a few times.

As long as your going above 60mph you'll be fine, usually. Unless its really heavy rain.

Its actually quite nice to have the roof down on a humid day in the rain on a motorway. Maybe thats just me being odd though.

Oh and 259 for driving on motorways

259
Joining the motorway. When you join the motorway you will normally approach it from a road on the left (a slip road) or from an adjoining motorway. You should

•give priority to traffic already on the motorway
•check the traffic on the motorway and match your speed to fit safely into the traffic flow in the left-hand lane
•not cross solid white lines that separate lanes or use the hard shoulder
•stay on the slip road if it continues as an extra lane on the motorway
•remain in the left-hand lane long enough to adjust to the speed of traffic before considering overtaking

Which is why I never see anyone do the above. Its always drive to the motorway at 40mph down the slip road. Notice a lorry at the last moment, panic, break a bit, slow down more. Panic some more. Then get in my way as I'm matching speed and aiming for the space I identified was mine at the top of the slip road.

grrr bar stewards...

no not odd at all, driving round with the roof down in the rain is great...until you get to traffic lights

So.....your boss is a tart?
You break the law and put lives at risk just because you 'might' get wet. hmmmm...

ok, so I'm a tart as well, but in this instance I wasn't gonna do the roof, he convinced me.
