Roof down locked?

I've had the Z4MR a few weeks now, and had noticed that the roof release button didn't seem to do anything, (button above centre storage box release). I had assumed that this was maybe due to the electric hood, and maybe it is not used in this configuration.

After reading a few articles I now believe that the roof should go down and "lock" in position, thus the need for the red handled "roof release cord in the boot! Is there a known issue as to why the roof will not fully retract and lock. Are there any detailed photos that show the roof flush with the bodywork and how the mechanism should engage?

Many thanks

The roof should open and close without the need for anything other than use of the centre console open/close button. When the roof is fully open it should engage in a central catch but this was known to be a problem on early models and at sometime (post facelift I think) the catch was removed.

For early models a TIS bulletin was released by BMW for a small modification to assist the catch 'catching' as the roof opens and reaches in fully open position.

On mine if the roof has been closed for some time the catch doesn't quite engage and I just push it down to engage it (only a few mm's). Once used several times and when the warmer weather makes the roof more flexible it catches everytime. Have certainly driven for many miles without the catch fully engaging with no problems and as it's been deleted on later models I have never considered it a real issue.

Several threads on here about it. Here's one for starters:

Many thanks,

It would appear mine being an 04-2007 that the catch has been removed. The roof appears to retract fully, but just no catch to release once down, (manually rather than in auto).

This is normal, just they left the button in place to confuse.
